Born in Italy, raised in Connecticut, and a soccer professional in five countries, one would think that Giuseppe Funicello has been on the move his whole life. Funicello was born in Agropoli, Italy, but moved to Norwalk, Connecticut at a young age. He shined on his local high school soccer team, which led to an NCAA offer from Southern Connecticut State.
However, Funicello's college career ended before it began when he received an offer to play in the youth academy of Salernitana, an Italian club located not far from his original hometown. He spent 2006 plying his trade with Salernitana's youth teams, but he and the club parted ways after one year.
Undeterred, Funicello found an opportunity back in the United States, where he signed on with the Brooklyn Knights for the PDL's summer season. In the fall of 2007, he left the amateur PDL for English shores where he joined semi-pro Ashford Town (Mdx). A year later, Funicello moved to Corinthian-Casuals, a fellow lower-tier English club.
With his dalliance in the English semi-pro game behind him, Funicello's next port of call was Real Maryland of the USL-2 division. Funicello would spend a season in the US' third tier before he found himself, once again, crossing the Atlantic.
In April 2010, Funicello landed another opportunity, this time in Iceland's second division with promotion challengers Thor Akureyri. By August, he earned a transfer to a bigger league when IFK Mariehamn of Finland added him to their roster. Funicello signed a two-month contract with an option for an additional two years.
In August 2011, Funicello transferred to VPS.
Funicello has no international experience.
