After wrapping up his college soccer career at the University of Maryland, Steffen would make the move to Germany where he signed with SC Freiburg in the middle of the 2014-2015 Bundesliga season. He was assigned to the reserve team.
While he did not play in the first season with the team, he would go on to play in 14 games the following season, making his debut on Aug. 1, 2015 in Freiburg's 0-0 tie with FC Saarbrucken.
Steffen return stateside in 2016 as he signed with Major League Soccer's Columbus Crew. However, he would have to wait to play with the first team as he was sent on loan to the Pittsburgh Riverhounds in the USL.
In 2017, Steffen would be named No.1 for the Crew and remained in that position until the summer of 2019.
In July 2019, Steffen made his return to Europe as he signed a contract with Manchester City of the English Premier League. After signing his contract, he would head back to Germany as he was sent out on loan to Fortuna Dusseldorf.
Steffen has represented the United States since the Under-18 level.
He was the starting goalkeeper for the USMNT U-18 side at the CONCACAF U-20 Championship and 2015 U-20 World Cup.
Steffen would go on to earn his first senior cap in January 2018 in a game against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
