Murphy's professional career would start out in England, where he signed with Sheffield Wednesday. He would only play one game for the Owls as he came off the bench in their League Cup game against Cambridge United in August 2016.

After two years with Wednesday, Murphy headed back to the United States to sign a contract with newly formed MLS team Los Angeles FC in May 2018. He would see no action with the first team, and was sent out on loan to Las Vegas Lights.

Following his release from LAFC, Murphy made a return to the UK, where he signed a contract with Scottish Championship team Arbroath.

International Career

Murphy spent some time playing for the United States U-20 national team.
