Adams started his odyssey to the professional ranks at the New York Red Bulls Academy, working his wall all the way up to their reserve team, New York Red Bulls II. He would go on to sign a contract with the reserve team in 2015 and play for them in the United Soccer League. In the 2016 season, he would help the team to lift the USL Cup with a 5-1 win over the Swope Park Rangers.
After impressing with the New York Red Bulls II, Adams would earn a move up to the first team. He became a regular in the Red Bulls first team in the 2017 season. He would help the team finish with the league's best record in 2018 to secure the MLS Supporters' Shield.
In December 2018, it was announced that Adams would move to Germany to sign with Bundesliga team RB Leipzig.
Adams has represented the United States at the U15, U17 and U20 levels.
In November 2017, Adams earned his first cap for the senior national team in their 1–1 tie with Portugal. In September 2018, he scored a goal against Mexico in a friendly at Nissan Field in Nashville, Tennessee.
