Wednesday the Irish website issued a report that said that the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) are going to step up their recruiting of Irish-American players in the United States and North America.

According to the report, Ireland's head coach Giovanni Trapattoni initiated the movement with hopes that they can find American players who are eligible for Irish citizenship that can further help the Irish national team.

It went on to state that Trapattoni recently requested a list of all players in the North American soccer leagues with Irish sounding names.

He has also asked the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) for a list of all Irish qualified players in the MLS.

So while most American players who have Irish passports, like Michael Parkhurst, have elected to play for the US, the FAI will be stepping up their efforts to see that future players choose to play for The Boys In Green.

Well the Citizenship rule used to be Great Grand Parent, but that was changed under pressure from most of the rest of Europe when there were fears of half of South Africa showing up on Europe's doorstep a decade and a half ago... now it's being the Child or Grandchild of an Irish citizen... but none of this really is all that new, the Republic has been looking to England and Scotland for potential players for years... it's just that now the States actually have started to produce players of sufficient quality that we are worth looking at as well... I'd expect Trapattoni likely feels the same about Australians as well.

If they want some MLS players they can have Danny O'Rourke or Ciaran O'Brien who's father Fran played for Ireland.

There will be plenty of talent for initial consideration of them to poach. What are the limits of heritage though? Grandparent?

Don't know his family tree, but would hate to see Jack McInerney even consider the jump. Like to see Ireland do well, but not at our expense.

More intelligent than desperate, I'd say. Announcing it though, that is weird.

It is very similar to what Rongen did during his break. He recently submitted a list of over a few hundred US prospects plying their trade in Europe. However Rongen's list was limited to kids with dual nationality as opposed to giovannis' list. The Irish can make you a citizen over-night.

The biggest threat or prospect they can take away from us is Conor Doyle who still hasn't played with our U-20 team...
