BRIAN SCIARETTA - Tuesday, November 1, 2011
With the US national team camp set to open next week, new faces could find themselves into the team.

The friendlies and in both September and October have seen some players establish themselves with the team while other players have struggled.

It is important to realize that there is also a U23 camp going on at the same time. At that Olympic camp in Germany you will most likely find young players like Teal Bunbury, Mikkel Diskerud, Juan Agudelo, and Bill Hamid who have spent time with the full US team in the past.

Not all US U23 players will be at the U23 camp, however. Top players like Brek Shea, Jozy Altidore, Timothy Chandler, and Danny Williams will likely be with the senior national team.

The past two months has seen strong play from players likes of Sacha Kljestan, Chris Rolfe, Michael Parkhurst, and Herculez Gomez who have all played great soccer the past few months and could catch the eye of Klinsmann.

In addition, players like Tim Ream and Michael Orozco have struggled and could sit these games out.

The injury is pretty similar to what it was for the October games. Jose Torres, Eric Lichaj, and Stuart Holden all remain out. Josh Gatt was in the mix for his first callup but he is out with a pulled hamstring. Fabian Johnson, however, is now playing again for Hoffenheim and he could earn his first cap in November.

Also with MLS playoffs set for their final stretch, Klinsmann may not select players from teams still in contention. In this predicted roster, I'll name alternates for the MLS players still alive

Predicted 23 Player Roster

Nick Rimando (replace with Brad Guzan if club conflict with Real Salt Lake)

This is the way JK will want to start if Donovan is not available. Edu might go in place of Jones or maybe Bradley goes there, but this puts most players in the same positions as they play at club level. Dempsey plays a bit wider, Williams a bit more withdrawn and Chandler on the right at club level. Obviously a bias toward Bundesliga players, but they are more capable, by virtue of club experience, of playing the way JK wants them to play. He will experiment from there, and I believe a great many players will see time at some point.

I say:
DEFENDERS:Carlos Bocanegra, Timmy Chandler, Steve Cherundolo, Oguchi Onyewu, Omar Gonzales
MIDFIELDERS: Kyle Beckerman, Clint Dempsey, Maurice Edu, Brek Shea, Jose Torres, Danny Williams, Landon Donovan, Micheal Bradley

FORWARDS: Jozy Altidore, Teal Bunbury, Edson Buddle

Onyewu is back! he stayed solid with character against Honduras and Ecuador. Steve and Timmy and permant are wide backs while Spector failed to show any use. next call up is Gonzales he has shown good potential and has been putting in 90 mins every game. as for the midfield, Kyle has been usefull picking up scraps in the midfield but is in compete with Micheal Bradley since Jones has failed to show playing time with his club. Brek Shea is just guaranteed, he is our superstar but is no landon donovan. Williams is hungry and good getting forward and should be like Shea a winger. Jurgen Klinsmann most likely use a 4-1-4-1 if he feels comfortable going forward he will drop Donovan Right under Jozy up top.

I say JK needs to include Luke Rodgers, Dane Richards...oh...sorry, they're not US players. Damn...OK well but that is what we need, speed, speed and more speed. JK talks about implementing a style of play, we have a bunch of speedy players at just about every position, not necessarily the best at those positions in terms of overall skill, certainly not the same as the line up choosen in this article. But speedy players play well with other speedy players. A speedy player is often left with no pass to others if they are too slow to move into position or to read the play. We see that all to often with the US. Imagine an attacking force of speedy players coming at all directions, the adversaries wouldn't know what to do to contain them. You all can list at least 14 really speedy US players, also skilled enough to accomplish this. let's do it, let's be known for being the fastest & fittest NAT team.

A few things that I would love to see that are probably unlikely:

1. Geoff Cameron for Beckerman-Larentowicz
2. Boyd for someone (Maybe Gomez, just because he's old and isn't really ever going to be a starter or consistent contributor, in my opinion. regardless of his current form)
3. Bedoya for Beasley
4. Feilhaber for Kljestan (Never really been impressed with him)

Also, Joe Corona on the Olympic roster or this one...I would probably prefer Olympic.

I think the predictions above are very close to what JK will likely bring into camp for these friendlies.
I think the defensive selections are right on target...but I could see Goodson brought in over Parkhurst.
Personally on the midfield selections I'd swap Dempsey to forward in place of Donovan. I just think Donovan is better on the Wing than he is central and Dempsey is currently the best poacher we've got. As far as bringing Beckerman and/or Larentowicz....personally I would prefer if neither were brought into camp. I don't think either is up to the international game, and frankly Jones is better as a pure distroyer type CDM than either and you have Bradley, Edu, Williams, and even Johnson who can all play that position as well.
I don't have any issue with the forwards except the swap of Dempsey & Donovan.

For those calling for Adu and Agudelo...neither has really shown much lately. I'd therefore let them contribute/lead the U-23 squad. Let them show the newbies the ropes and give them a bit of hunger for the Senior level. I could see Danny Williams being in the U-23 group as well, but actually hope hes with the senior team.

The question is what will Jurgen do? I think you have a pretty good roster for what Jurgen is thinking. Although, it doesn't seem like he is very interested in John, Gonzo, Adu or Feilhaber. For what reason I don't know, but at least currently, they seem out of favor.

I would personally drop Beckerman and Beasley completely. Depending on MLS playoffs, injuries, and any issues for overseas players, I'd instead add the likes of Adu and Bedoya. I'd like to think that Bunbury would be in contention as well based on his current form and future upside. Also, Goodson should definitely be added to the list of defenders. I'd say Geoff Cameron and Zach Loyd are also possibilities on the defensive side.

If the Galaxy and Sporting KC are in the championship (No Donovan, Gonzo, or Bunbury), I'd like to see something like this as a starting lineup (barring injuries):

You can also do this:

In either lineup, you can use the likes of Agudelo, Adu, or Goodson to change up the shape, pace, or straight swap. You can then use Jones, Edu, and Bradley as subs or starters for the other game. We just have so many DM's. I want to see Williams on the USMNT as the DM, just like when he plays for Hoffenheim, especially if Johnson is in front of him. I'm not sure what is up with Bedoya, but I've heard he may be dealing with injury, but I'm hoping he will be ready, especially because Donovan probably won't be and I'd prefer to keep Williams in his actual position. Maybe Adu can do the job on the right side while making his inward runs.

Goodson is 100% on the roster and will start one if not both of these matches. JK doesn't change his mind on players until they don't perform on the National Team....he has his 23 and so no b-c-d team players for this one.

Uhm, Geoff Cameron should definitely get the callup. John has been horrible the last month while Cameron has excelled. I would go as far as saying Cameron should be called over Gonzo. Feilhaber maybe. But I have feeling both Boyd and Agudelo will be with the full national team. Especially if Bunbury and Donovan are going to MLS final. I agree on both Rolfe and Gomez.

Maybe I put to much stock in the Olympic team but I think Timothy Chandler, Brek Shea, danny williams, and Jozy Altidore should be in that camp with the others. That team looks like it would have the skill to make a deep run and assuming they are going to be on that team I think they should be in that camp to get used to their teammates. Its going to hurt our chances to win with them gone but it is just a friendly and with them with the U23 it opens 4 more spots to bring in other players for a look. That is where you could bring in a Bedoya, Feilhaber, John.

I agree with Blaise, get some new young people out there. Bocanegra, Beckerman, Beasley, Cherundolo, and even Donovan and Dempsey are getting too old for the next world cup. They are great but we need to develop the next generation with fast young players to compete in Brazil.

We have a pretty good midfield and improving front. Defense is weak and needs a lot of work except for the goalie. Howard has saved the defense too many times and players need to stop the ball from getting to him so often.
