PREDICTING THE ROSTER FOR MAY-JUNE
RECAPS
EXTRA TIME
BRIAN SCIARETTA - Monday, April 9, 2012
Next month the US national team will open camp in preparation for a series of friendlies and the start of 2014 World Cup Qualifying.

Jurgen Klinsmann has said that he will call up 23 plays for the camp and he will have an extended list of players on standby.

Right now, the only injuries I am taking into account are to Stuart Holden and Omar Gonzalez. Oguchi Onyewu and Zak Whitbread have been dealing with injuries recently and they could be questionable. If both Whitbread and Onyewu are not able to recover, I think Seb Hines and Michael Parkhurst would be next in line in the central defense pool.

Bottom line is that I do not see many surprises at this time. The only one I am going with is for young Molde winger Josh Gatt to receive his first callup. The reason is that Klinsmann will need to provide some speed on the wings.

Here is the list I predict will make the team along with players who are also in contention.

Goalkeepers

Tim Howard - Everton
Nick Rimando - Real Salt Lake
Brad Guzan - Aston Villa

Defense

Carlos Bocanegra - Rangers
Clarence Goodson - Brondby
Steve Cherundolo - Hannover

Oguchi Onyewu - Sporting Lisbon
Eric Lichaj - Aston Villa

Midfielders

Michael Bradley - Chievo Verona
Jermaine Jones - Schalke
Danny Williams - Hoffenheim
Maurice Edu - Rangers
Fabian Johnson - Hoffenheim
Jose Torres - Pachuca
Brek Shea - FC Dallas
Josh Gatt - Molde

Forwards

Jozy Altidore - AZ Alkmaar
Herculez Gomez - Santos Laguna
Clint Dempsey - Fulham
Landon Donovan - LA Galaxy

In the Mix

Michael Parkhust - FC Nordsjaeland
Mikkel Diskerud - Gent
Sacha Kljestan - Anderlecht
Kyle Beckerman - Real Salt Lake
Seb Hines - Middlesbrough
Damarcus Beasley - Puebla
Joe Corona - Club Tijuana

Andy, Chandler at right wing?! Come on, use your brain. It will either be Williams who played there against Italy or what every wanted to see at U23s, is Josh Gatt. He gives us insane speed on the right wing.

Not sure if Gooch is fit yet.

What do yall think about Kenny Cooper possibly getting a call? He's making a good case in NY.

I like: Lichaj Boca, Oyewu, Chandler in the back. Maybe ream for Oyewu (but at the cb does it matter that his stronger foot is left?). Jones, Edu, Bradley (much improved ball distribution), in the midfield. Possibly swap Jones or Edu for Torres. And Donavan Altidore(Maybe Herc)and Dempsey up front. I know Herc is not a hold up guy, but his off ball movement along with Dempsey is very strong. This might help keep the Brazil outside back at home a little.

@ Richie: thanks for the feedback. I'm all for Lichaj taking that starting LB role because Fabian looked killer in the Slovenia friendly. Then Shea wouldnt start as much would could take some much needed pressure off him and his development. I agree that Shea shouldn't start right now he's just not playing well enough but the potential is certainly there.
Maybe Ream/Goodson/Whitbread at one of the CB spots would make it more doable? With Johnson moving up into the midfield and Lichaj at LB?

As far as Brians roster goes, my personal changes would be Boyd for Gomez, and Adu for Edu. Its not what I think Klinsmann will do, though.

@ColeJoseph - in theory, i think that could be a good lineup. I just dont know if they know how to play it. Bradley isnt as forward thinking as id like him to be as that #8. He needs a little more offensive flare. Also, the centerbacks need to be more savvy on the ball, and Gooch and Boca, while very good defensively, like to boom the ball out of the back too much. Very much agree we need to start playing Chandler at RB and Johnson at LB. Although, I do think Lichaj gets the call and we could see him at LB and therefore we could move Johnson up to LM where he has looked just as good. I might be one of the few who arent completely sold on Brek Shea just yet. Dont get me wrong, he should be on this team, just dont think he should be starting.

I am so sick of the "let's put Timmy Chandler in the midfield" thing. We have a number of good midfielder's already. Yea he's fast but we have other guys who are faster. Don't tell me people have forgotten how weak our backline is. I mean people can't seriously want to see Dolo as our starting RB in 2014? I like him and think he's a good player. I even think he'll be on the squad in Brazil but not as a starter. I just don't see it. I personally want the German connection at RB and LB. Provided they continue to play well of course.
Another lineup that has been brought to my attention:
Donovan...........Altidore...........Dempsey
............Torres...................Bradley........
...........................Jones........................
Johnson.........Boca......Gooch..........Chandler
............................Howard....................
nice little 4-3-3
what do you all think?

Boyd is going to be good for us in the future but he is playing in the 4th tier of German Soccer. Herc has been scoring like crazy and deserves to be on the team. Danny Williams is more of a defensive mid and if we already have Edu, Bradley, and Jones, I don't see the need for Danny but because of his German ties he will probably be on the roster. All in all this is lots of talented players to choose from. We don't even see a guy like Wondo listed anywhere and all he does is score in MLS.

Defense - Leave off Tim Ream and Zak Whitbread for Seb Hines

Midfield - Leave off Brek Shea and Maurice Edu and Call in Freddy Adu. Drop Donovan and Dempsey to Mids

Forward - Altidore, Gomez, Wooten, Boyd

I think we need to start thinking about a replacement for Landon Donavon. I am concerned with the grind that he puts on his body. I know he was impressive at Everton but he looks flat and tired with LA. Besides that, he seems more suited for the counter attacking style of Bradley than possession and moving fluidly with numbers when they do attack that JK is trying to implement. Do not get me wrong, Landon when motivated can be a game changer, but maybe Gatt will challenge Landon to work harder and up his game to the elite level we Americans believe he is at.
