BRIAN SCIARETTA - Monday, April 9, 2012
Next month the US national team will open camp in preparation for a series of friendlies and the start of 2014 World Cup Qualifying.

Jurgen Klinsmann has said that he will call up 23 plays for the camp and he will have an extended list of players on standby.

Right now, the only injuries I am taking into account are to Stuart Holden and Omar Gonzalez. Oguchi Onyewu and Zak Whitbread have been dealing with injuries recently and they could be questionable. If both Whitbread and Onyewu are not able to recover, I think Seb Hines and Michael Parkhurst would be next in line in the central defense pool.

Bottom line is that I do not see many surprises at this time. The only one I am going with is for young Molde winger Josh Gatt to receive his first callup. The reason is that Klinsmann will need to provide some speed on the wings.

Here is the list I predict will make the team along with players who are also in contention.

Tim Howard - Everton
Nick Rimando - Real Salt Lake
Brad Guzan - Aston Villa

Carlos Bocanegra - Rangers
Clarence Goodson - Brondby
Steve Cherundolo - Hannover
Timothy Chandler - FC Nurnberg
Zak Whitbread - Norwich
Tim Ream - Bolton
Oguchi Onyewu - Sporting Lisbon
Eric Lichaj - Aston Villa

Jermaine Jones - Schalke
Danny Williams - Hoffenheim
Maurice Edu - Rangers
Fabian Johnson - Hoffenheim
Jose Torres - Pachuca
Brek Shea - FC Dallas
Josh Gatt - Molde

Jozy Altidore - AZ Alkmaar
Herculez Gomez - Santos Laguna
Clint Dempsey - Fulham
Landon Donovan - LA Galaxy

In the Mix

Michael Parkhust - FC Nordsjaeland
Mikkel Diskerud - Gent
Sacha Kljestan - Anderlecht
Kyle Beckerman - Real Salt Lake
Seb Hines - Middlesbrough
Damarcus Beasley - Puebla
Joe Corona - Club Tijuana

Your selection seems a bit thin at forward - assuming that the preference is for a 4-3-3, then we may need another target forward. The selection works if you want flexibility in switching to a 4-4-2 as necessary - however, it doesn't seem wise to be limited to one target forward.

If Holden ever gets healthy, it would be interesting to see a 3 man midfield with Donovan and Edu. Below would be a solid line up.
Starters should be:
GK Howard
RB Cherundolo
CB Onyewu
CB Boca
LB F. Johnson
RM Chandler
CM Donovan
CM Holden
LM Dempsey
ST Altidore

@2tone: There is no way Chandler plays anything but RB for the US. No matter what happens for his club we have way too many deficiencies on defense to move him into a crowded midfield. Besides we have other guys who have great pace that we can put out there. Bottom line is by the time WC rolls around the line-up will probably be:
This lineup is my just a guess but I can almost assure you that Chandler and Johnson are RB and LB respectively. Chandler at his native RB is a scary good thought and Johnson (even though I love his creativity in the Mid) seems to possibly be the answer at LB that we have long awaited.

If Gooch and Whitbread are injured i like to see Ream start he showing that he can play at the top level.

Its really only fair to give Herc the nod over Terrence. Herc has been starting consistently and pumping home goals. What else can the man do to earn a call? Boyd would be better suited to continue working on his game over the summer and focus on breaking into a stacked Dortmund squad. I don't object to him being called in but simply has to be there. Seb Hines hasn't filed a one time switch so no need to include him in any national team list. For the time being I think Timmy continues to start at LB while Fabian mans the LM.

I only disagree with putting F.Johnson in midfield and Chandler in defense. Chandler has played nothing but RW for the past 4 months. F.Johnson has played nothing but LB for the past 3 months. Here is my 23 man roster.
GK: Howard, Guzan, Rimando
Defense: Dolo, Lichaj, F.Johnson, Boca, Gooch, Whitbread, Goodson
Middies: Donovan, Chandler, Beasley, Shea, Bradley, Jones, Torres, D.Williams
FWDS: Dempsey, Altidore, Gomez, Cooper, Boyd
Stanbys: GK: Uhm Don't know, Defense: Castillo, Ream, Hines, Cameron. Middies: Gatt, Zusi, Beckerman, Kljestan, Adu. FWDS: Wooten, Sapong, Wondo, Buddle, Corona

You think Torres is overrated?! Really?! And adu isn't?! For one Torres is more of a complete player than lame adu! Two Torres plays every game for his club and actually assist and scores goals! Adu never played regular minutes in Europe nor in his regular MLS team...So he shows he can dribble that's not impressive! You must not notice because your still in the American hype of him being the next American superstar haha wake up from your delusional fantasy and see why he hasn't it made it nowhere...Adu is the most overrated player in the US! And one more thing GATT and Torres has one thing adu doesn't, coaches who speak highly of them.. Does adu?!

As I pretty much agree with your picks, especially on d with Lichaj,Onyewu and Chandler, I couldnt disagree with you more in the midfield and forward position. Your leaving off Boyd is a bad choice. Selecting Gomez over Boyd seems silly. Boyd looks like a legitimate weapon with serious potential. Gomez, well we have already seen him and he looked ok. To continue to exclude Freddy Adu is just plain ridiculous. We need his services in the midfield far more than an untested Gatt or either Torres or Shea, who really seems overated. Adu has earned his chance to play for the senior team so he can gell with our starters and show his obviouis abilities on offense. All this said, I realize he can be a liability on defense, but we have got to learn how to Score and set up realistic chances to Score.

Did Hines make the official switch yet? If so that could be a great pickup. I also really hope that Castillo doesn't get the call. I also would rather see Boyd get called than Herc. We pretty much know what Herc can do but Boyd is kind of a mystery. He's got outstanding potential but what can he do internationally.
It would be nice to see Gatt get called in. Also good to hear that Molde won't be playing him at RB much longer.
I also think that Adu gets called in. He played great for the U23 team and JK acknowledged it. I think he finally gets a much deserved call.

I think Boyd gets the call. Could be wrong. But I think there is a chance of him getting called into push Jozy. Despite the love everyone is giving to Herc, I think Boyd is 2nd on the depth chart with Agudelo out. If Shea is getting called in, why not Boyd? I know Boyd isn't getting minutes for anything but Dortmund's reserve team, but he showed how on form he is. We'll see. Otherwise, I think you nailed it.
