VOM STEEG LANDS AT FORTUNA
RECAPS
EXTRA TIME
DAVID SMITH - Tuesday, August 23, 2016
United States U20 and former UCSB keeper Justin vom Steeg has moved across the Atlantic to join 2nd Bundesliga club Fortuna Düsseldorf.

The team announced the signing as a roughly ten-month contract running through the end of the recently started season.

"Fortuna Düsseldorf has signed the keeper Justin vom Steeg," the team announced. "The 19 year-old US-American last played at UC Santa Barbara and receives a contract with Fortuna until June 30, 2017."

The signing was in part a reaction to the recent injury of 19 year-old prospect Tim Wiesner, who is out for an extended amount of time after undergoing shoulder surgery.

This places vom Steeg as the presumed third-string keeper for the team, although he will likely be in line for extensive action with the organization's U23 team in the fourth-tier Regionalliga West, or their U19 developmental squad.

In either case, this will be valuable experience in a professional environment for a player who is trying to push his way into contention for next summer's U20 squad which will try to reach the World Cup in South Korea.

He recently started three of the four teams for Brad Friedel's U19 squad that competed in the COTIF tournament in Spain, including their signature 1-0 shut-out victory over hosts Spain.

I hate to be the harbinger of bad news, ladies and gentlemen, but Michael Orozco will start for the US men's national team in Jacksonville.
