DAVID SMITH - Friday, December 18, 2009
Following a week of intense speculation, Landon Donovan's much-anticipated loan move to Premier League club Everton was finally confirmed by the English club today.

The LA Galaxy captain will join the Toffees squad at the start of the January transfer window and will remain with the team until March 15, in line with details set forth in Thursdsay's press conference announcing his groundbreaking contract with the 2009 MLS Cup finalists.

"It's all done now," Toffees head coach David Moyes stated in a Friday press conference. "Landon will join us at the start of January."

An impending agreement between the clubs had become the worst-kept secret in the soccer world over the last week, with Donovan and Galaxy coach Bruce Arena explicitly naming the Merseyside club as the lone remaining contender for the forward's services during the winter months.

The long-time Everton coach has high hopes for Donovan to immediately help his injury-depleted squad which has struggled through the first half of the season, currently floating just one point above the relegation line.

"I think we need to strengthen the squad to make sure we are not in the situation we are currently in where we have so many injuries," Moyes admitted.

"I really need players who can hit the ground running and make an impact in the team quickly. Hopefully Landon will be able to do that."

"He will come in and add pace, he's a good finisher and has captained the USA national team so he has that experience," Moyes continued, adding "I am hoping Landon goes out and shows us what he can do."

Donovan joins longtime USA teammate Tim Howard at the Merseyside club, as they face a tough schedule in the early months of 2010 which includes the already-packed Premier League schedule, the FA Cup and a February home-and-home series in the Europa League round of 32 against Portuguese team Sporting CP.

Donovan's first chance to hit the field in Everton's blue jersey will be on January 2 for their FA Cup third-round encounter against League One team Carlisle United, with his potential Premier League debut coming one week later in a mouth-watering date against Arsenal FC in London.

Think about about it, he was unable to make it with substandart teams like Bayern Leberkusen and the other one, I believe was FC Bayern Muenchen. I say again he may be the best the US has to offer but worldwide he is just a high profile Amateur.

you have no idea what you are talking about. you cant call someone an amateur if you have no experience or you are not better. Germany is a very physical league he had not experienced that type of play yet so you can't say anything bad. Please get your facts right before commenting on anything again. he will prove himself in england as a premier player in the world.!!!!!

I think it's great. I am Glad he is getting the support he needs from fans. Beckham sure did'nt get any support. If other players in MLS would follow suit MLS and US Soccer would grealty improve.

I don't understand why Landon keeps trying to play in Germany and England when his game is so perfectly suited for La Liga, where they're playing the most interesting football anyway.

It's like he's trying to prove he can play in a physical league when his game would actually be appreciated in Spain and he could learn to bring some more midfield creativity to the USMNT. He's even fluent in Spanish for god's sake.

I do like the fact that he's seeking out the challenge but you could drop him in the midfield for Barca and they wouldn't miss a beat.

Ok, GREAT, now I can take back some of the not so nice things I've said. I think the chances for the USA just went up for South Africa. I plan on adding him to my fantasy team ASAP.
