US U20'S DRAWN INTO GROUP OF DEATH
RECAPS
EXTRA TIME
BRIAN SCIARETTA - Monday, March 25, 2013
The United States U-20 team was draw into Group A for the 2013 U-20 World Cup, likely the tournament's "Group of Death" this summer in Turkey.

Joining the U.S. team in Group A are Spain, France and an African team to be determined by the end of March.

The United States will open its tournament against Spain, followed by a game against France. The Stars and Stripes will then conclude group play against the African side.

The draw will be a great challenge for US U-20 head coach Tab Ramos, who guided his team to qualification last month after victories over Haiti, Costa Rica, Canada and Cuba. The team lost to Mexico 3-1 in extra time in the CONCACAF finals.

In the tournament's format, the top two teams from each group will qualify for the knockout stages, along with the four best third-place teams.

The US U-20 team has not had much success since its 2007 quarterfinal run charged by the play of stars like Michael Bradley, Jozy Altidore and Freddy Adu. The team did not advance out of group play in 2009 and failed to qualify in 2011.

Hope we get an easier african team (not that many of them are easy anyway)!

I'd honestly rather us have this draw than an easy one. We rarely have to earn our way out of group stages.

A big question for U.S. fans heading into the World Cup is surely on Jozy Altidore and just what is plaguing the young striker at Sunderland.
