Carlos Bocanegra and Racing Santander dropped a tough contest at Villarreal on Sunday to remain in the relegation zone.
Villarreal 1 Racing Santander 0
Bocanegra went the full 90 minutes as Racing was held scoreless for the second consecutive week, this time on the road to fourth place Villarreal.
A 46th minute goal by Moisés was all the Yellow Submarine needed to maintain their place in the promotion eligible fourth position. Racing's best chance at goal was in extra time when Gai Assulin struck the crossbar, much to the relief of the 18,000 in attendance at El Madrigal.
With the loss, Santander remain in 20th place with 38 points with only five matches remaining. Ahead of Santander are Real Murcia with 37 points along with Mirandés and Hércules, who are safe at the moment with 38 points. Another relegation for Santander would likely wreak even more havoc on already financially stressed team.
Bocanegra and the Highlander's face another tough test next week when they host Barcelona's II team, who is in eighth place in the league and has scored an astounding 69 goals this season to Racing's 35.
Oguchi Onyewu did not make the 18 as Málaga were routed by Valencia 5-1 on Saturday.
