The U.S national team has made four changes to its roster for the knockout stages of the Gold Cup.

Head coach Jurgen Klinsmann has dropped Oguchi Onyewu, Jack McInereny, Corey Ashe, and Herculez Gomez.

The four have been replaced by Eddie Johnson, Matt Besler, Omar Gonzalez, and Alan Gordon.

The changes are not very surprising as the biggest boost is in central defense as Omar Gonzalez and Matt Besler have been the starting pair during the most recent hexagonal World Cup qualifying games. Eddie Johnson has also seen regular minutes for the U.S team over the past year.

Alan Gordon has only earned one cap in his entire career and that was as a substitute against Antigua and Barbuda last year in World Cup qualifying. Despite only playing a few minutes, he assisted on Eddie Johnson's winning goal.

The United States national team won Group C with three wins and will face El Salvador on Sunday in the quarterfinals in Baltimore.

I think Onyewu injured himself against Cuba. Not very bad, but it would have taken him out od the next game. Klinsmann is looking ahead to the qualifiers and beyond by cementing his backline. Orozco and Goodson have been looking good and I think JK will do some "mix and match" with these 4 centerbacks.

Bringing in Eddy johnson adds speed to the frontline and Alan Gordon is a tough no-nonsense center-forward.

I was just hoping to see McInerny get some time, but he's young and there will be other chances.
