JOHN KRETLOW - Friday, January 3, 2014
The FA Cup third round will see Brad Friedel's Tottenham take on their bitter rivals Arsenal, while Jozy Altidore hopes to jump start his tough season by helping Sunderland beat Carlisle United.

Sunderland - Carlisle United

Jozy Altidore and Sunderland take on League One side Carlisle United.

The American forward is expected to see the field this weekend.

Sunderland's five game unbeaten run was broken this week against Aston Villa. Nevertheless, the team's play has improved in the last weeks and they hope to continue on against Carlisle.

The Cumbrians are currently in 15th place in League One. They have lost three out of their last four matches and hope to manage a big upset against the Premier League side.

Kieren Westwood and Carlos Cuellar will miss for Sunderland because of injuries.

Nottingham Forest - West Ham United

Eric Lichaj and Nottingham Forest host West Ham United at the City Ground.

Lichaj is a regular in Forest's back line and he could see the field on Sunday.

Forest is currently in 5th place in the Championship and have not lost a match in seven games. They drew at Reading this week and hope to continue their strong play with victory this weekend.

West Ham is near the bottom of the Premier League standings and are pitted in the drop zone. They are winless in their last four games, however they hope to gain confidence in Cup play with a win against a tough Championship side.

Arsenal - Tottenham Hotspur

Brad Friedel and Tottenham take on Arsenal in an FA Cup version of the North London derby.

The American ‘keeper generally backs up Hugo Lloris, but Friedel is expected to see the field this weekend.

Spurs go into the match unbeaten in their last four matches. They beat Manchester United at Old Trafford this week and look to keep playing strong soccer against their bitter rivals.

The Gunners have also gone unbeaten in their last four games. They are at the top of the Premier League standings and are coming off a win against Cardiff City.

Former Arsenal player Emmanuel Adebayor is injured and not likely to see the field for Spurs.

Stoke City - Leicester City

Geoff Cameron and Stoke City welcome Leicester City to the Britannia Stadium in FA Cup action.

Cameron is a regular in Stoke's lineup and he is expected to feature, while Maurice Edu hopes to make the game day roster. Brek Shea was loaned out to Barnsley.

The Potters go into this weekend's match having only won once in their last five games. They did however manage a draw this week against a tough Everton side. They hope to grab some confidence from that match and continue on in the FA Cup.

Stoke will face a red-hot Foxes team that sits at the top of the Championship and has won four straight matches. They have scored eight goals in their last two games and look to keep their scoring touch going against the Premier League side.

Stoke's Asmir Begovic, Robert Huth, and Andy Wilkinson are sidelined.

Barnsley - Coventry City

Brek Shea and Barnsley host Coventry City at Oakwell Stadium on Saturday.

Shea is on loan from Stoke City and made his debut for the Tykes this week in their match against Birmingham City. He is likely to see the field once again this weekend.

Barnsley has not won a game in seven matches in all competitions and they find themselves at the bottom of the Championship.

Nevertheless, the Tykes hope they can move along in the tournament and potentially gain confidence for league play.

Coventry on the other hand has lost just once in their last eight matches. They look to keep their strong play going this weekend.

Danny Williams and Reading take the road to play Brighton & Hove Albion.

Williams has been featuring regularly and is expected to see the field this weekend.

The Royals broke their three game losing streak this week when they tied Nottingham Forest. They are currently in 9th place in the Championship, but because of a congested top half of the standings they are just a point from a playoff position.

Brighton is in 7th place and just goal differential away from a playoff position. They have lost just once in their last six games and they hope to keep that momentum going in FA Cup play this weekend.

Seb Hines hopes to see the field in Middlesbrough's match against Hull City.
