BRIAN SCIARETTA - Sunday, January 19, 2014
The United States national team will face the Ukraine on March 5th for its last friendly on a FIFA international date before World Cup camp opens in May.

The game will be a good challenge for the U.S team as the Ukraine are currently ranked 18th in the world and are the highest ranked team that did not qualify for this summer's World Cup in Brazil. The United States and Ukraine have met just three times with the U.S holding a 0-2-1 record. The last meeting was in 1992 in New Jersey where the teams played to a 0-0 draw.

The U.S team is presently in Brazil for its annual January camp. Last week it fell to Sao Paolo 2-1 in a friendly. In that game the lone U.S goal was scored by Chris Wondolowski.

The U16 is seeing some very good talent. I have seen Haji Wright and his brother, play at the LAG academy and the guy is not only an good athlete, he is a big. technically skilled and fast athlete. He is a player, who only a few years ago would have chosen basketball or football, but has migrated to soccer

Of course his career is just starting and like so many youth players who had early promise and either could not overcome injury or flamed out over the hype and promise, he has a bright but perilous road ahead. But being at the LA Galaxy academy and being around the many talented players, he should get good guidance. My big fear is that he will attract the attention of a really big team, become enamored and disappear, when he is stacked and stockpiled like so much cord wood, in a big teams youth system. Lets hope he picks carefully, avoids serious injury and like his fellow teammates become a class of great players, like the Onyewu,Donovan, Beasley class that seems, was too long ago.
