American midfielder Joe Gyau announced on Friday that he will undergo a second surgery on his left knee.
The Borussia Dortmund player suffered a torn meniscus in the U.S. national team's friendly against Ecuador on Oct. 10 last year and underwent surgery back in Germany. It was expected that he would return to training in January, but now it looks like Gyau will be on the shelf a bit longer.
Borussia Dortmund II coach and former U.S. international David Wagner told a German newspaper that Gyau could miss the rest of the season.
"Couldn't help but cry when the doc told me I needed a second surgery! But it's all part of the game. What doesn't kill you will make you stronger, And not even injury can stop me from achieving my dreams and goals," Gyau wrote on his Instagram page along with a picture of his heavily wrapped left knee.
The Florida native, who has a one-year contract with the Ruhr-based team, has only made one appearance for the senior side this season in a substitute role.
