KENYA BROWN - Monday, August 31, 2015
U.S. head coach Jurgen Klinsmann announced an initial 23-man roster for friendlies against Peru and Brazil as preparation for the playoff game against Mexico for a place in the 2017 Confederations Cup.

The roster consist of players who were a part of the 2014 World Cup and 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup teams. Matt Besler makes his return to the team after long spell out, while Jermaine Jones returns after recovering from injury. Goalkeeper Tim Howard also makes his return to the national team setup after taking a year-long sabbatical. However, he will have to fight for a return to the starting eleven as Brad Guzan remains number one for Klinsmann.

Forward Andrew Wooten will enter his first camp after some fine displays with Sandhausen in the early stages of the 2.Bundesliga season.

After coming off a high with wins over the Netherlands and Germany in Europe in June, the U.S. followed it up with a rather disappointing performance in the Gold Cup, finishing in fourth place. Klinsmann and his team know that they will need to step up and make improvements before their meeting with their cross-border rivals. So the two friendlies will provide some answers as to who will be there come October.

"The bigger picture is to get some answers for how we put things together for the Mexico game a month from now. Obviously we want to continue to have a good flow of guys from the Gold Cup, but also to bring back guys who are in position to compete for a spot on the roster for Oct. 10. Our message to these guys is simple: prove a point that you want to be at the Rose Bowl," said Klinsmann on the US Soccer website.

The U.S. will first take on Peru at RFK Stadium in Washington, DC on Sept. 4 followed by Brazil four days later at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
