Bobby Wood's red card over the weekend has seen him receive a three-game ban, German soccer authorities announced on Tuesday.
The 23-year-old Hamburg forward received his marching orders during the team's 3-0 loss to Köln when he elbowed defender Dominique Heintz as they waited for a free kick. Matters only got worse for Wood afterwards as he was severely criticized by his coach, Markus Gisdol, who called his sending off "inexcusable," fined him for his actions.
Wood has 24 hours to lodge an appeal on the suspension, but if it is not successful, he will miss games against Borussia Dortmund, Hoffenheim and Werder Bremen.
It has been a rough season so far for Hamburg as they sit at the bottom of the Bundesliga standings with only two points from nine games. They have also only scored two goals overall - both of them coming from Wood.
Hamburg will welcome Borussia Dortmund to the Volksparkstadion on Saturday.
