Bobby Wood and Hamburg shared the points with Schalke after a late goal, while Christian Pulisic and Borussia Dortmund clung on the automatic Champions League spot following a tie with Augsburg.
Schalke 1-1 Hamburg
A stoppage time goal from Pierre Lasogga allowed Hamburg to escape the Veltins Arena with a point as their game with Schalke ended in a tie.
Bobby Wood started for Hamburg and played the entire game.
With one game to go in the Bundesliga season, relegation-threatened Hamburg needs to get all of the points they can if they want to avoid the playoff games. However, Schalke made life difficult for them.
The host scored the first goal of the game in the 25th minute when Nabil Bentaleb's cross into the area found the head of teammate Guido Burgstaller. The ball then looped over Hamburg goalkeeper Christian Mathenia and into the top corner of the goal.
Schalke nearly doubled their lead in the 32nd minute when a headed ball from Klaas-Jan Huntelaar beat Mathenia but not the post.
Hamburg pressed for a goal in the second half and was finally rewarded in the 92nd minute when Lewis Holtby set up Lasogga for the equalizer.
The tie keeps Hamburg in 16th place with 35 points - two behind Wolfsburg, Augsburg and Mainz while three behind Bayer Leverkusen.
Augsburg 1-1 Borussia Dortmund
Borussia Dortmund will have to work next weekend to guarantee their automatic Champions League spot as they could only must a tie against Augsburg at the WWK Arena.
Christian Pulisic came off the bench for BVB in the 80th minute.
The battle between Dortmund and Hoffenheim will go down to the wire in the season's final games as both are level on points in the standings. Hoffenheim were able to come away with a win that kept them in touch with their rivals.
Dortmund went down a goal in the 28th minute as Alfredh Finnbogason scored from close range following Roman Burki's save on a shot from Philipp Max.
However, the visitors did not have to wait long to score the equalizer as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang responded four minutes later as he redirected in a strike from teammate Shinji Kagawa.
Dortmund a couple of good opportunities to take the lead in the second half, but those efforts were well saved by Augsburg goalkeeper Andreas Luthe.
BVB remain in third place in the standings with 61 points but only ahead of Hoffenheim on goal difference.
Timmy Chandler started for Eintracht Frankfurt in their 4-2 loss to Mainz.
Fabian Johnson came off the bench for Borussia Mönchengladbach in their 1-1 tie with Wolfsburg.
Alfredo Morales came off the bench for relegated Ingolstadt in their 1-1 tie with Freiburg.
Jerome Kiesewetter started and scored a goal for Fortuna Düsseldorf in their 3-2 win over Nurnberg.
Julian Green came off the bench for Stuttgart in their 1-0 loss to Hannover.
Russell Canouse came off the bench for Bochum in their 2-1 win over 1860 Munich.
Jann George started for Jahn Regensburg in their 3-2 win over Chemnitzer.
Shawn Barry started as relegated FSV Frankfurt were hammered 4-0 by Werder Bremen II.
David Yelldell watched from the bench for Sonnenhof Großaspach in their 1-0 loss to Holstein Kiel.
