The US Under-20 national team were knocked out of the FIFA U-20 World Cup following an extra time loss to Venezuela at the Jeonju World Cup Stadium.
Following their 6-0 win over New Zealand in the round of 16 game a few days earlier, the young Americans had a boost in confidence coming into their quarterfinal game against the South American as a spot in the semifinals was on the line. However, just in the previous U-20 World Cup, the team would hit a wall that prevented them from taking the next step.
After a scoreless 90 minutes, the two teams would head in to extra time to see who could take the advantage.
Venezuela finally opened the scoring in the 96th minute through Adalberto Penaranda. Samuel Sosa sent in a low cross from the left and Penaranda would one-time his shot past Jonathan Klinsmann and the ball hit the back of the net.
La Vinotinto got their insurance goal in the 116th minute as Nahuel Ferraresi would head home a Ronaldo Lucena corner kick.
Jeremy Ebobisse would score a goal for the US in the 117th minute to cut the deficit. Brooks Lennon sent his free kick in to the area and the forward's looping header would go over Venezuela goalkeeper Wuilker Farinez and hit the post before crossing the goal line.
However, the US had no time to find the equalizer as they bowed out of the tournament once again at the quarterfinal stage.
