RECAP: WEEKEND GERMAN ACTION
EXTRA TIME
KENYA BROWN - Monday, September 25, 2017
Christian Pulisic was in the starting lineup as Borussia Dortmund ran riot over Fabian Johnson and Borussia Monchengladbach in the most exciting game in the weekend's Bundesliga games.

Borussia Dortmund 6-1 Borussia Monchengladbach

The goal glut for Borussia Dortmund continued into the weekend as a hat-trick from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang led them to a massive win over Borussia Monchengladbach at Signal Iduna Park.

BVB have been on a surge as of late, with the team scoring eight goals in their last two games. They face a Foals team that has failed to find any consistency so far, but they are currently in the middle of the pack in the standings.

Maximilian Philipp scored Dortmund's first goal in the 28th minute when Aubameyang crossed the ball from the right and the German forward put his volleyed effort in the back of the net.

Philippe added his and the team's second 10 minutes later Jeremy Toljan fed him a pass in the middle of the area that he easily put past 'Gladbach goalkeeper Tobias Sippel.

Aubameyang finally got his name on the scoresheet just before the halftime whistle when captain Sokratis sent a low pass from the back that found Philipp, who then passed it on to the Gabon international to tap into the open goal.

The forward continued his goal-scoring spree in the second half as he scored again mere minutes after the restart. Mario Goetze's free-kick in the area would find him as he headed the ball towards the goal. It ricocheted off the post, but he would be there to put away the rebound.

Aubameyang would then seal his hat-trick in the 62nd minute as he literally stumbled his way into scoring.

However, Dortmund will be unhappy that they could not maintain the shutout as the visitors finally scored in the 64th minute as Lars Stindl pounced on the loose ball in the area.

That did not stop BVB as they went on to round out the scoring in the 79th minute through Julian Weigl. The midfielder would send a dipping half-volleyed shot into the back of the net to send the fans home with a smile.

A great night for BVB as they head into the week looking to get their Champions League campaign on track.

Dortmund remains atop the Bundesliga standings with 16 points while 'Gladbach sit in ninth place with nine points.

Hoffenheim 2-0 Schalke

Weston McKennie will have to wait another week to see if he can get his first win with Schalke in the starting lineup as goals in both halves saw them fall to Hoffenheim at the Rhein-Neckar Arena.

After earning his first start in the middle of the week against Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich and playing well, the young American midfielder earned a second start for the team as they looked to get back in the win column.

The host went ahead in the 13th minute when some quick passing left the ball to Dennis Geiger and his strike from the edge of the area beat Schalke goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann.

Schalke worked hard to find the equalizer and played well throughout the course of the game.

However, Hoffenheim sealed the game with a second goal in stoppage time as they caught Schalke on a counter attack and Lukas Rupp beat Fährmann to the ball before tapping it into the goal from close range.

Schalke sits in seventh place in the standings with nine points.

Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 Hamburg

The struggles for Bobby Wood and Hamburg continued as Bayer Leverkusen walked away with a comfortable win at the Bayer Arena.

Die Rothosen entered the game not only with a three-game losing streak but also with no goals to match.

And the trend would continue in this game as Kevin Volland's goal in the 20th minute put Hamburg in a hole. Leon Bailey headed the ball down towards the German forward and his shot easily beat goalkeeper Christian Mathenia.

Lucas Alario doubled Leverkusen's lead three minutes later when connected on a cross from Bailey.

Volland scored his second goal in the 83rd minute to round out the scoring when he tapped the ball into the open goal after a pass from Alario.

With losing streak now at four, Hamburg now sits in 15th place in the standings with six points.
