It looks like Christian Pulisic and Borussia Dortmund will be battling for the Europa League spot as they failed to capitalize on a win against Apoel Nicosia and settled for a tie.
Apoel Nicosia 1-1 Borussia Dortmund
After losses to Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur in their first two group games, BVB was looking to kick-start their Champions League campaign into gear against the Cypriot team.
Dortmund was aggressive from the start but could not find the opening goal, even when their host had two players go down to injuries - Igor De Camargo and Boy Waterman.
Apoel, which had entered the game having not scored a single goal in their first two Champions League games, finally got on the scoresheet in the 62nd minute when Mickael Pote capitalized on a mistake by BVB goalkeeper Roman Burki to give his team the surprise lead. The Swiss international's attempt to pass the ball to a teammate was intercepted by Lorenzo Ebecilio. The forward got past Marcel Schmelzer and fired a shot that Buerki fumbled, allowing Pote to pounce on the rebound and score.
Dortmund finally found the back of the net to get the equalizer five minutes later as Sokratis rose up to head in a cross from Mario Goetze.
The visitors then had two good opportunities to take the lead. Shinji Kagawa's effort just minutes after the equalizer was well saved by Apoel's backup goalkeeper Gudino. Then in stoppage time, Pulisic sent in a cross from the right towards Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang but his headed effort was parried away by Gudino.
Dortmund sits in third place in Group H with one point out of three games.
