Jorge Villafana ended a turbulent week by becoming a champion as Santos Laguna held on to defeat Toluca and lift the Liga MX Clausura title.
Toluca 1-1 Santos Laguna (Santos Laguna win 3-2 on aggregate)
Julio Furch scored a crucial goal in the first half as Santos Laguna were able to hold off the pressure from Toluca to settle for a tie in the second leg of the Clausura final at Estadio Nemesio Diez.
Villafana came off the bench for Santos this time after watching all of the action from the bench in the previous leg. It would also give some reprieve for the left back who with his wife was recently robbed at gunpoint.
Los Guerreros entered the second leg with a slight advantage over their opponents as they came away with a dramatic 2-1 win at their home ground, Estadio Nuevo Corona, leaving everything on the line in their next encounter.
The visitors opened the scoring 10 minutes into the contest as Furch collected a pass from teammate Carlos Izquierdoz and put his low rolling shot past Toluca goalkeeper Alfredo Talavera.
Despite scoring the early goal, it was still a tight game with both sides coming close to scoring more goals in the first half.
With the game still with a singular goal, Toluca would find a lifeline in the 82nd minute as Gabriel Hauche ran onto a headed pass from Antonio Rios and guide the ball past Santos goalkeeper Jonathan Orozco to level the score.
However, in the end, Santos Laguna would walk away with the title to end the 2017-2018 Liga MX season.
