The 2018 Liga MX Apertura campaign got underway over the weekend, with only a handful of Americans seeing action in the first games of the season.

Necaxa 2-1 America

Goals from Victor Davila and Brian Fernandez canceled out a strike from Roger Martinez to help Necaxa to a narrow win over America at Estadio Victoria de Aguascalientes.

Both Ventura Alvarado and Joe Corona started for their respective teams.

Necaxa entered their first game of the season on a high after coming off a win over Monterrey to earn the first piece of silverware on offer in the Supercopa MX.

The host had the first chance of the game when Davila headed the ball towards goal, but it was well saved by America goalkeeper Augustin Marchesin.

The capital team would then have their chance to break the scoreless deadlock before the half-hour mark when Renato Ibarra dribbled the ball from the midfield into the area before taking a shot that would be deflected and tipped over the crossbar by Hugo Gonzalez.

Necaxa would finally open the scoring in the 35th minute when Davila took a pass from Luis Perez at midfield before unleashing shot from the edge of the area, beating Marchesin.

America came close to leveling the score three minutes before halftime when Andres Ibarguen blasted his shot from outside the area, forcing Gonzalez to make a spectacular save.

It would take America until the second half to find the equalizer but they got in the 72nd minute when Ibarguen feed the ball to Martinez, who fired his half-volleyed shot past Gonzalez.

However, Necaxa would bag the game-winner two minutes later when Davila turned provider when he and Fernandez linked up to bury the ball in the back of the net.

Necaxa sits in fifth place after the first game while America is in 11th place in the standings.

Santos Laguna 2-1 Lobos BUAP

Brian Lozano and Jonathan Rodriguez led the comeback for Santos Laguna grabbed their first win of the season over Lobos BUAP at Estadio Nuevo Corona.

Michael Orozco would make his debut for Lobos starting in their back line while Jorge Villafana did not dress for the 2018 Clausura champions.

The visitors got on the scoreboard early when Bryan Rabello found the back of the net in the eighth minute. The Chilean forward decided to take a chance from long range and was on the money as he beat Santos goalkeeper Carlos Acevedo.

The visitors came close to doubling their lead in the 40th minute when Aldo Cruz played a low cross into the area but Mauro Lainez shot was saved by Acevedo and trickled past the post.

Lozano would then have a chance to score the equalizer at the other end, but his shot came crashing off the post.

However, the Uruguayan would be rewarded two minutes into the second half when volleyed in a cross from teammate Carlos Orrantia.

Rodriguez scored the game-winner 10 minutes later when he fired his shot past Lobos goalkeeper Jose Rodriguez to ensure the three points.

Santos Laguna sits in sixth place while Lobos BUAP is in 13th in the standings.

Notes

Omar Gonzalez made his debut for his new team Atlas as their game with Queretaro ended in a 0-0 tie.

Rubio Rubin came off the bench for Tijuana in their 2-1 win over Guadalajara.

William Yarbrough watched from the bench as Leon started the season with a 2-0 loss to Tigres UANL.

In Ascenso MX, Rodrigo Lopez started but was sent off and Jose Carrera-Garcia watched from the bench for Celaya while Fernando Arce Jr. came off the bench for Dorados as both teams settled for a 1-1 tie.

Josue Soto started for Cimarrones de Sonora in their 2-1 win over Atlante.
