KENYA BROWN - Monday, January 14, 2019
Ventura Alvarado and Necaxa took all three points in a close game against Pumas as the Clausura season in Liga MX has gotten underway.

Necaxa 2-1 Pumas UNAM

A goal ten minutes from regulation helped Necaxa to a narrow win over Pumas at Estadio Victoria de Aguascalientes to earn their first points of the season.

Alvarado started the game for Necaxa and played the entire game.

The host came out the gate immediately in the first half looking to score the first goal of the game and came very close six minutes into the contest when Facundo Castro directed his cross into the area from the right for Brian Fernandez. But the forward's headed effort went over the bar. That was followed by another effort for minutes later, but Pumas' Alan Mendoza did well to track back and clear the danger.

However, there was nothing they could do to stop Necaxa from breaking the deadlock in the 15th minute when Cristian Calderon pounced on the loose ball after a shot from teammate Martin Barragan, and put it in the back of the net.

Both teams pushed for goals late in the first half, but neither could add more as Necaxa went into the break with the advantage.

Pumas would start the second half the more aggressive side as they had several chances to level the score.

And they finally did so in the 77th minute when Brian Figueroa's cross into the area found Felipe Mora, who headed the ball past goalkeeper Hugo Gonzalez.

But the tie would not last long as Necaxa scored the eventual game-winner in the 81st minute when Pedro Campos somehow redirected the ball from going out of bounds and into the path of Fernandez, who had an easy tap-in from close range.

However, Pumas disputed the goal for an apparent offside. The referee then confirmed that it was indeed good and Necaxa went on to celebrate their first win of the season.

Necaxa sits in seventh place in the standings with three points.

In other Liga MX action, Omar Gonzalez was in the starting lineup for Atlas as their late comeback was not enough in their 2-1 loss to America.

Michael Orozco started for Lobos BUAP as they continued their good start to the Clausura with a 1-0 win over Veracruz.

Joe Corona came off the bench for Tijuana while Eduardo Fernandez watched from the bench for Tigres UANL as the latter came away with a 3-0 win.

William Yarbrough watched from the bench for Leon as they fought back to claim a point following a 2-2 tie with Monterrey.

Down in Ascenso MX, Jose Carrera-Garcia started for Celaya as their game with Mineros de Zacatecas ended in a 0-0 tie.

Alonso Hernandez started for Correcaminos UAT and scored a goal in their 3-1 win over Atlante.
