RECAP: WEEKEND GERMAN ACTION
EXTRA TIME
KENYA BROWN - Tuesday, January 22, 2019
Weston McKennie and Alfredo Morales each provided the game-winning assists for their respective teams as the Bundesliga returned from its winter break.

Schalke 2-1 Wolfsburg

Daniel Caligiuri would come through for Schalke as he scored both goals to help them to a win over Wolfsburg at Veltins Arena.

Both Weston McKennie started the game for their respective teams while Haji Wright made a cameo appearance near the end of the game for the Royal Blues.

With the second half of the season starting over the weekend, Schalke was looking to continue their push up the standings after a slow start while Wolfsburg entered in the top six holding onto a Europa League spot.

The host were rewarded early in the game when the referee pointed to the spot for a penalty after Wolfsburg defender William brought down Alessandro Schopf. Caligiuri then stepped up and sent his powerful shot past goalkeeper Koen Casteels.

It did not take long for Wolfsburg to respond as they scored the equalizer in the 20th minute. Renato Steffen's cross into the area found Admir Mehmedi and his shot came crashing off the post. However, Elvis Rexhbecaj would be there to put away the rebound.

Schalke came out in the second half aggressive and McKennie nearly had an assist five minutes in when his cross from the left was met by Marc Uth, his headed attempt was saved by Casteels.

However, the American midfielder had an all-important assist in the 78th minute when he made a darting run towards the area before passing the ball to Caligiuri, who sidestepped a defender, to fire his shot into the back of the net.

Schalke now sits in 12th place in the standings with 21 points while Wolfsburg lies sixth with 28 points.

Augsburg 1-2 Fortuna Dusseldorf

Benito Raman's goal just before full-time helped Fortuna Dusseldorf to a much-needed win over Augsburg at the WWK Arena.

Alfredo Morales started the game for Dusseldorf, playing the entire 90 minutes.

Augsburg dominated most of the first half, but it would be the host who struck first just before the halftime whistle when Marvin Ducksch was left wide open to head in a cross from teammate Dodi Lukebakio.

The host were in search of the equalizer and were rewarded in the 64th minute when Jonathan Schmid's free-kick found the goal. It appeared that Dusseldorf goalkeeper Michael Rensing had made the save, but technology proved different as it showed that the ball had crossed over the line.

Dusseldorf looked like the team that was going to score another goal in this game, and that is what they did in the 89th minute when Morales' long ball from midfield land at the feet of Raman. The Belgian then coolly slotted his shot past goalkeeper Gregor Kobel to guarantee them the win.

The win puts Dusseldorf in 14th place in the standings with 21 points.

Notes

Bobby Wood started for Hannover while Josh Sargent came off the bench for Werder Bremen in their 1-0 win.

Christian Pulisic came off the bench for Borussia Dortmund while Tyler Adams watched his first Bundesliga game from the bench as the league leaders claimed a 1-0 win.
