Omar Gonzalez and Atlas continued their turnaround from a horrible Apertura stage with a comfortable win over Michael Orozco and Lobos BUAP.
Atlas 3-1 Lobos BUAP
Atlas hit Lobos BUAP and did not look back as they walked away from this game with all three points at Estadio Jalisco to keep their fine start to the Clausura going.
Omar Gonzalez started for Atlas in a strong outing, playing the entire 90 minutes.
After languishing near the bottom of the standings during the Apertura stage and missing out on the playoffs last year, Atlas has come out during this stage with a purpose.
Gonzalez nearly gave the host the lead just three minutes into the game when his headed attempt from a corner kick beat Lobos goalkeeper Jose Rodriguez, but the ball just whizzed past the post.
Atlas was in full attack mode and finally broke the scoreless deadlock two minutes before halftime when Anderson Santamaria got his head on a corner kick from Osvaldo Martinez and put the ball in the back of the net.
The action continued to be fast and furious in the second half as both teams pushed for goals.
However, it would be Atlas that would double their lead in the 76th minute when Facundo Barcelo's diving header found the goal following a cross from Juan Vigon.
Clifford Aboagye rounded out the scoring for Atlas in the 84th minute even it was a bit freakish. The Ghanaian midfielder was attempting to cross the ball into the area, but the ball somehow ended up into the goal after hitting the inside of the post.
Bryan Rabello scored a consolation goal for Lobos two minutes later as Atlas continued their march towards a spot in the playoffs.
Atlas sits in fourth place in the standings with seven points while Lobos BUAP drops to 10th place with six points.
Ventura Alvarado started for Necaxa as they shared the points following a 0-0 tie with Morelia.
Joe Corona watched from the bench as Tijuana went down to Cruz Azul in a 1-0 loss.
Eduardo Fernandez watched from the bench as Tigres UANL came away with a 1-0 win over Toluca.
William Yarbrough watched from the bench as Leon handed a 4-0 thumping to Queretaro.
Down in Ascenso MX, both Rubio Rubin and Fernando Arce started, with the latter scoring a goal, as Dorados fell in a 2-1 loss to Potros UAEM.
Joaquin Hernandez started for Correcaminos UAT as their game with Alebrijes de Oaxaca ended in a 0-0 tie.
Jose Carrera-Garcia started for Celaya as they played out a 1-1 tie with Venados.
