RECAP: WEEKEND DUTCH ACTION
EXTRA TIME
KENYA BROWN - Monday, August 19, 2019
Sergino Dest continued to make inroads in the Ajax lineup as they beat Haji Wright and VVV Venlo while Desevio Payne and Emmen bagged their first win of the Eredivisie season.

VVV Venlo 1-4 Ajax

Ajax moved to the top of the Eredivisie standings as they were too much for VVV Venlo to handle in their comfortable win at Covebo Stadion.

Dest would make his first start for the Amsterdamers in league action and play the entire 90 minutes while Wright came off the bench for VVV to play 19 minutes.

After coming off a squeaker in their Champion's League qualifier in the middle of the week against PAOK, the reigning champions were looking to maintain their dominance in their domestic league, and VVV were the perfect candidates on the day.

It took Ajax some time but they eventually broke the scoreless deadlock a minute before the halftime whistle. Dusan Tadic would tee up Hakim Ziyech to fire a powerful rolling shot past VVV goalkeeper Thorsten Kirschbaum.

The visitors maintained their momentumin the second half as the goals kept flowing. They would be rewarded a penalty just minutes into the restart when it was judged that Roel Janssen handled the ball in the area. Tadic then stepped up and powered his shot past a motionless Kirschbaum.

Klaas Jan Huntelaar extended Ajax's lead in the 66th minute some great passing between the team in the final third saw Nicolas Tagliafico send in a low cross from the left and the striker tap in from close range.

Ajax put away their fourth 10 minutes later when David Neres got his name on the scoresheet after a scintilating backheel pass.

VVV would grab a consolation goal in the 89th minute when a counter-attack ended with Evert Linthorst squeezing his shot past Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana.

Emmen 2-0 Heerenveen

Emmen got their Eredivisie campaign off the ground as they came away with a convincing win over Heerenveen at De Oude Meerdijk.

Payne would come off the bench to play the entire second half for Emmen.

After two successive defeats, Emmen was not looking to lose anymore ground to the rest of the pack. However, they would have to try to beat Heerenveen that entered the game unbeaten so far this seson.

The host started the game positively and opened the scoring just four minutes into the contest when Nikolai Laursen curled in a free-kick from a long way into the top corner of the goal.

As the game went further on, both sides would have chances, but Emmen were the ones to double their lead four minutes before halftime. Glenn Bijl headed the ball in from close range after a cross from teammate Lorenzo Burnet.

The second half would be quiet, but Emmen did the job as they claimed all three points in the end.

Note

Richard Ledezma came off the bench for Jong PSV in their narrow 3-2 loss to Almere City.
