Timothy Weah made his return to action for Lille in their loss to Olympique Marseille, but it appears the young American has gone down with another injury.
Lille 1-2 Marseille
Lille's pursuit of Champions League soccer for next season took a slight dent as an own goal and a strike from Dario Benedetto saw them fall to Marseille at Stade Pierre-Mauroy.
Timothy Weah would make his first appearance for Lille after spending months out of the team due to a hamstring injury, playing the final 10 minutes in their loss.
The host started out the brighter of the two sides and had a few good chances to open the scoring. Victor Osimhen took a chance at goal from the edge of the area, but Marseille goalkeeper Steve Mandanda was able to parry the ball around the post. Loic Remy then followed with his own chance, but the French goalkeeper would once again be on the spot to make a fantastic save.
Both teams headed to the locker room with the game scoreless.
The second half would finally see Lille make the breakthrough as they scored in the 51st minute. Jonathan Bamba released Osimhen with a through-ball, and the Nigerian forward had enough space to chip his shot over Mandanda to give them the lead.
Despite holding the lead, the Great Danes would find themselves in trouble when the referee pointed to the spot for a penalty after it was judged that Tiago Djalo had tripped up Bouna Sarr in the area. Valentin Rongier stepped up to take the spot-kick for Marseille, but goalkeeper Mike Maignan would guess right and make the save to preserve Lille's lead.
The excitement from the penalty save would be short-lived as Marseille leveled the score thanks to some help from Lille's Reinildo, who headed the ball into his team's goal.
The goal left the host shaken as they allowed their guest to take the lead three minutes later. Valere Germain's low cross from the right side would find Benedetto as he made a late run into the area to get his foot on the ball.
It was stinging loss for Lille, but they are lucky to have not lost any ground to their rivals as the chase for the third Champions League spot rolls on.
As for Weah, he announced after the game that he re-injured himself, with reports saying he injured his thigh. He reported the news on his Instagram, but there is no word on the severity of the injury.
Lille remains in fourth place in the standings with 40 points.
Theoson-Jordan Siebatcheu was given the start for Rennes but he could not find the back of the net as his former team, Stade Reims, came away with the 1-0 win.
