Lynden Gooch provided the only highlight for Americans in England over the weekend as his goal helped Sunderland to a win over Bristol Rovers as they hunt for promotion place from League One.

Sunderland 3-0 Bristol Rovers

A sending off for Bristol Rovers allowed Sunderland to eventually breakthrough as they came away with the shutout win over their opponents at the Stadium of Light.

Gooch, who has been in excellent form recently, started and played 81 minutes for the Black Cats as they kept the pressure on fellow promotion chasers Rotherham United and Coventry City for on of the two automatic spots.

The hosts were left frustrated for portions of the game as they could not put away the final ball, and Bristol did well to keep them at bay. However, that would all change just before the hour mark when the referee sent off Abu Ogogo for his collision with Chris Maguire.

That would open the proverbial floodgates as Gooch scored Sunderland's first in the 71st minute. Some lovely passing by the team was finished off in the end with the American steering the ball home following a low cross from Maguire.

Charlie Wyke doubled their lead two minutes later when the forward was left in a one-on-one situation with Bristol goalkeeper Jamal Blackman, and he would win out in the end as put the ball in the back of the net.

Luke O'Nien rounded out the scoring for Sunderland in the 82nd minute as his shot took a deflection before bouncing into the goal.

It was another good win for Sunderland, but they'll be thanking their lucky stars for that sending off to give them the lifeline.

Sunderland sits in fourth place in the standings with 57 points, just three points out from the automatic promotion spots.

In action from the Premier League, DeAndre Yedlin was an unused substitute as Newcastle United allowed a first-half to fall to Crystal Palace in a 1-0 defeat.

Over in the Championship, Tim Ream and Fulham have slipped a bit off the pace for an automatic promotion spot as they could on muster a 1-1 tie with Duane Holmes-less Derby County.

Cameron Carter-Vickers and Luton Town were no match for Charlton Athletic as they succumbed to a 3-1 loss.

Geoff Cameron and Queens Park Rangers shared the points with Nottingham Forest following their 0-0 tie.

Antonee Robinson continues to be held out of the Wigan Athletic line-up as the Latics secured a 1-0 win over Millwall to keep their survival hopes on track.

Down in League One, Charlie Kelman and Southend United's fightback was too late as they suffered a narrow 3-2 defeat to Burton Albion.

Matthew Olosunde and Rotherham United maintained their hold at the top of the standings with a 2-1 win over Accrington Stanley.
