KENYA BROWN - Monday, March 9, 2020
U.S. Under-23 national team head coach Jason Kreis has announced his 20-man roster for the upcoming CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Championship that is set to be held in Guadalajara, Mexico.
The team, which was revealed on Sunday, is comprised of 15 players from Major League Soccer, with the other five coming from European and Mexican club teams. Richie Ledezma, Erik Palmer-Brown, Chris Gloster, Ulysses Llanez, and Sebastian Saucedo will leave their respective teams for the two-week-long tournament.
Jackson Yueill, Reggie Cannon, Paxton Pomykal and Jesus Ferreira are some of the well-known names that have been selected from the MLS contingent.
Some notable omissions from the team are the likes of Keaton Parks, Christian Cappis, Emmanuel Sabbi, Brooks Lennon and Kyle Duncan. It has been rumored that these players were not granted their release by their respective clubs.
Despite missing some players that could have contributed to the U-23s campaign to qualify for Tokyo 2020, Kreis will be counting on the players he does have at his disposal to reach their goal for the summer soccer tournament.
"With a lot of games in a short amount of time, we will need the contributions of all 20 players on this roster to achieve our ultimate goal of qualifying for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo," said Kreis in a statement on the U.S. Soccer website. "This is our sixth time together with this U-23 group, so I think we have a real firm understanding of how we want to play and who we want to be."
It will be a tough path to qualifying for the Olympics as the U.S. will face off against Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, and cross-border rival Mexico in Group A.
If the Under-23's can qualify, it will be the first time for them to make the Olympics since the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing, China.
