HARKES, POWERS SPL BOUND
EXTRA TIME
KENYA BROWN - Thursday, April 16, 2020
Ian Harkes and Dillon Powers will be playing in the Scottish Premier League next season as Dundee United has been granted promotion following a vote to end the season.

The news came out on Wednesday as the Scottish Professional Football League's proposal to end the season in the country's lower leagues was finally pushed through after United's crosstown rivals Dundee FC voted yes to go ahead with the move. The Sottish Championship has been postponed since March 7 due to the coronavirus outbreak and there was no timetable set for a return to action.

Dundee United was on the path to automatic promotion before the league suspended play as they had a commanding 14-point gap between them and second-place team Inverness CT. And both Harkes and Powers played significant contributions to the Tangerines' success.

Harkes, 25, appeared in 31 games during the campaign and contributed with a pair of goals and assists. Powers, 29, who joined Dundee in January from Orlando City, found himself quickly inserted into the line-up as he went to play in nine games.

While earning promotion to the Scottish top flight is an excellent achievement, it is a bittersweet one under the circumstances that the world is going through. This sentiment was expressed by Dundee United's American owner Mark Ogren.

"It gives me enormous pleasure and an over-riding sense of humility to hear that the club has been promoted back to the SPFL Premiership as Ladbrokes Championship winners," he said in a statement on Dundee United's website. "It would have been thrilling to have achieved this promotion following a game at Tannadice in front of all our supporters, but I've been told on many occasions since we arrived in Dundee that if there is a hard way to achieve something, then we will find it."

While the season has ended for the lower leagues, there is no word on what will happen for the outcome of the Scottish Premier League season.
