Luca de la Torre came off the bench to provide an assist as Heracles opened the 2020-2021 Eredivisie season with a win over ADO Den Haag.
Heracles 2-0 ADO Den Haag
A second-half surge saw Heracles claim all three points in the end as they came away with the shutout win over ADO Den Haag at Stadion Erve Asito.
Luca de la Torre made his debut for his new following his move from Fulham, playing the final 27 minutes.
The host dominated much of the first half against a ADO Den Haag side that was debuting seven new players in the starting line-up. Despite some good chances to open the scoring from Hercales, it would end scoreless as both teams headed to their locker rooms to make adjustments.
Those adjustments only worked out for one team as Heracles opened the scoring in the 48th minute through a set piece. Silvester van der Water's corner kick from the right side found and unmarked Rai Vloet in the area and he sent a thumping header to the back of the net.
Den Haag was struggling throughout the game as they could not keep control of the ball, allowing their opponents many opportunities to widen their lead.
And Heracles would go on to double their lead in the 70th minute thanks in part to de la Torre. The young American midfielder was able to get his foot on the ball from a Den Haag corner kick to launch a counter-attack. Van der Water charged towards the other end with ball before passing it on to Robin Propper. Propper then crossed the ball to de la Torre who tried to slot it home, but could not get a good touch on it. However, he got enough of the ball to lay off to van der Water to steer into the goal.
Frustration had already set in for Den Haag and they were forced to play with ten men for the remainder of the game when the referee sent off Boy Kemper for his second yellow card.
A comfortable win for Heracles as they will look to build on this one for the long season ahead.
In other Eredivisie action, Sergino Dest came off the bench to provide cover in the back after a first-half red card for teammate Nicolas Tagliafico as Ajax started their campaign with a 1-0 win over Sparta Rotterdam. It was reported a week ago that Dest had been dropped from the starting eleven. There has been no indication as to the exact reason why he was relegated to the bench, but the summer speculation about a transfer to either Bayern Munich or Barcelona could have led the coaching staff to keep out for the time being.
Desevio Payne was on the bench as FC Emmen allowed five unanswered goals in the second half to see them fall to VVV Venlo in a 5-3 defeat.
Down in the Eerste Divisie, Richie Ledezma converted a spot-kick as Jong PSV cruised to a 4-1 win over Jong AZ Alkmaar.
Alex Mendez came off the bench to play the final 15 minutes for Jong Ajax in their narrow 2-1 loss to NEC.
Sebastian Soto played the final 10 minutes for SC Telstar in their 2-1 loss to MVV.
Mael Corboz came off the bench to play the final 24 minutes as Go Ahead Eagles blanked Cambuur in a 2-0 victory.
