Jonny Campbell and Svay Rieng came away with a crucial win over Visakha to ensure that the battle for Cambodia's C-League title comes down to the final game of the season.

Visakha 0-2 Svay Rieng

Svay Rieng has put themselves in a strong position to retain their league title as they came away with the shutout win over Visakha at the Visakha Stadium.

It has been a bit of a topsy-turvy season for the reigning champions. They started off the season very well, but then the COVID-19 outbreak put a stop to their momentum as the league shut down for a brief period. Once they returned to action it looked like they hadn't missed a beat as they easily handled whatever opponents came their way.

Then two unexpected losses put Svay Rieng's chances of retaining their title in jeopardy. However, they were able to bounce back and keep the pressure on their unbeaten foe and league leader Boeung Ket.

Although the conditions on the night were horrendous as both teams played on a severely waterlogged field, it would be the visitors that found the goals in the end.

Prak Mony Udom opened the scoring just six minutes into the contest when he took a free-kick from a considerable distance from the goal. The ball took a bounce right in front of the goalkeeper, which he should have had no problem stopping, but the wet ground caused it to take a skip that he could not handle and the ball cradled into the back of the net.

Svay Rieng came close to doubling their lead when they decided to test the goalkeeper a second time with a long ball. He should once again his unsteadiness as he fumbled the ball, allowing Jean Befolo "Privat" Mbarga to pounce on the loose ball. However, the Cameroonian striker could not get enough power on the ball to get past the keeper.

Visakha would also have their chances to level the score in the first interval, and they came close a couple of times. But Campbell and the backline did well to ensure the opposition did not get anything past them.

At the other end, Svay Rieng finally scored their second before halftime when Prak popped up once again to score. The captain fought his way through a crowded area to get his foot on the ball from a corner kick.

Visakha would play with 10 men for the rest of the game as one of their players was sent off for shoving a Svay Rieng player, but it did not matter much as the champions now move on to prepare for their final game of the season.

Svay Rieng remains in second place in the standings with 38 points, just two behind Boeung Ket.

Campbell and his team have the advantage as a win for them and either a loss or a tie for Boeung Ket would see the league title stay with Svay Rieng.

The title-decider will come down on October 25 as Campbell and Svay Rieng will play at home to NagaWorld while Boeung Ket has a tough away game to the capital team Phnom Penh Crown.
