Helmond Sport opened up the season after the winter break with a commanding three goal victory over BV Veendam on Monday evening.
American Charles Kazlauskas started in midfield and went the distance in the win.
The home team went ahead in just the third minute when the ball was headed around the Veendam penalty area before it fell to the feet of Jeffrey Altheer who slammed it past a sliding Peter Van der Vlag.
Just eight minutes later, Marc Höcher sent a cross in to the penalty area that skipped off the head of the visitors' Paul Matthijs before falling to Mark Veldmate at the back post. The striker headed home to double the lead.
Veendam defender Gerard Wiekens, who picked up a yellow card in the 44th minute, saw yellow for the second time in the 66th minute. The captain's lunging tackle on Kazlauskas saw him sent off by Maarten Ketting.
Michael de Leeuw pulled a goal back in the 78th minute for the visitors when his penalty kick smacked off the post and past Robert van Westerop.
Two minutes Höcher scored an unlikely unassisted goal when his corner kick was corralled by Van der Vlag who was deemed inside his goal box by the officials to restore the two goal advantage.
Höcher's remarkable match culminated in yet another assist in the 90th minute when he found a streaking Youssef Chida insider the penalty area. Chida's glancing header beat the visiting 'keeper and ended the games scoring.
Helmond will face De Graafschap on Friday evening.
