Former VPS striker Lawrence Smith is taking his craft to the western Finnish town of Kokkola after signing with Kakkonen club GBK for the 2010 season.

Smith spent last season in the Veikkausliiga with VPS where he was a regular starter and tallied three goals before inking a deal to play for GBK.

Going from the top level of Finnish soccer to the third level is normally viewed as a step down, however Smith explains that the decision to sign with GBK made the most sense for him from a playing and monetary perspective and will hope to parlay his performance this season into a bigger and better opportunity in 2011.

"I have signed with GBK in the [Kakkonen] in Kokkola," Smith confirmed to YA. "There really isn't much here in Finland so in order to go somewhere where I can make decent money and play is here. I wish it were different but I don't mind taking a hit this year and going somewhere else next season."

The Charleston, South Carolina native will open his season on May 1st when GBK travel to TP-47.
