WOODY BAUM - Sunday, April 11, 2010
Fransico Torres and Pachuca dropped an important home match while Herculez Gomez failed to increase his goal tally on Sunday night against Marco Vidal's Indios.
Pachuca 0 – 2 Atlas
Pachuca blew an important opportunity to crawl back into the liguilla picture when they lost to Atlas at home on Saturday night.
The impact is magnified by Morelia's away win against Chivas, further solidifying their number two spot in Pachuca's group.
Pachuca started off playing offensively and creating opportunities but Atlas managed to score off a header by Efrain Alvarez in the 28th.
Pachuca were given a gift in the 38th minute when Pachuca striker, Dario Cvitanich, was taken down in the area by Guillermo Martin in what would have given Cvitanich a clear opportunity at goal.
Martin was sent off, but Dario Cvitanich was unable to convert the penalty.
After the expulsion, Pachuca were never really able to create chances and looked frustrated.
Atlas, despite being a man down kept attacking and Efrain Alvarez scored again in the 56th minute after receiving a long pass in the area and beating Pachuca keeper, Miguel Calero on the near post.
In the 80th minute, Pachuca woke up and created several dangerous opportunities.
Torres started and played the entire 90 minutes and almost brought Pachuca within one in the 82nd off a shot from outside the are that bounced off the cross bar.
Pachuca will look to rebound against Cruz Azul on Wednesday.
Puebla 1 – 2 Indios
Puebla went into their match with Indios hoping to increase Herculez Gomez' scoring streak. However, perhaps they should have been more concerned with Indios.
Carlos Ruiz started well for Puebla and put them up in the 27th chesting the ball, adjusting his body and shooting past the left post.
Puebla looked dominant and Indios looked lost. However, that changed in the 59th minute when Emil Martinez netted home a goal for the visiting squad.
Martinez received the ball from outside the area and given too much space by the Puebla defense. Martinez made them pay with a strong shot that Puebla keeper Alejandro Alvarez had no chance at blocking.
Indios had several other clear chances that they couldn't convert, as has been custom this season, until in the 78th minute, the Brazilian Jose Carlos Dias scored from a free kick from outside the area.
Herculez Gomez started and played the entire 90 minutes. He created several opportunities and took several shots but was unable to find the back of the net, and thus, prove that he is human.
Marco Vidal started and played the entire 90 minutes for Indios and was effective in helping to disrupt the Puebla attack.
Sammy Ochoa came off the bench in the 91st minute in Estudiantes' tie against Tigres who was without an injured Edgar Castillo.
