CHAD WINGER - Tuesday, May 11, 2010
Charlie Davies will not be heading to South Africa as his name was not on the provisional 30-man World Cup roster released by US head coach Bob Bradley.

Davies was not given medical clearance by French club Sochaux and will not be able to fulfill his near-miraculous recovery from October's car crash.

There were few other surprises on the list, with the possible exception of Real Salt Lake's Robbie Findley or Columbus Crew defender Chad Marshall.

Injured Schalke midfielder Jermaine Jones did not make the list, while long-term knee victim Oguchi Onyewu was added to the roster.

All 30 players will now report to Princeton, New Jersey for a week-long camp from May 17-23 ahead of two friendlies - against the Czech Republic on May 25th in Hartford, Connecticut and Turkey on May 29th in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Bradley will need to pare down his submission to a 23-man final roster by June 1.

The roster looks good, hopefully we will get to see all the striker given a chance in the pre world cup games. I am interested to see EJ, Buddle and Gomez against international competition. I think only 1 of those 3 will make the final roster, with ching and altidore as the other strikers.

I'm ok with this roster. sure, there are holes but the only name i would've liked to have seen are legitimately left off (Davies, Jones not fit enough, Castillo not having played in the run up to the selection). Adu is left off b/c the rest of the team needs to work too hard to cover for him when he's on the pitch. We'll win or lose as a team, not a collection of individuals so, give Bradley a break or shut up when we do well.
My best 23 not on this list (who'd you take off this list?):
GK: Robles, Perkins, Rimando
D: Castillo, Hejduk, Wynne, Simek, Conrad, Califf, Orozco
MF: J. Jones, Beckerman, Adu, B. Davis, B. Evans, Cameron, Szetela, Quaranta
F: Casey, Cunningham, C. Davies, Cooper, Rolfe

so maybe Davies isn't quite ready to play at the WC level yet, but I'm going to bring up France '98. Anyone else remember that nightmare? The team was thrown into turmoil when Harkes was dropped from the team (turned out to be a really interesting reason) and they did not play cohesive football. They barely managed to string a couple of passes together.

Charlie Davies on the roster could be a very positive thing for the squad, even if he never plays a minute. Remember all the players wearing #9 jerseys as we secured qualification last year? I'm not 100% sure that I could base a selection on the emotional aspect, but Davies in the squad could be the rallying cry that gets this team to play with some heart. Sometimes, that makes the difference.

This is my 23:

GK - All Three

D - Boca, Gooch, Cherundolo, DeMerit, Spector, Goodson, Marshall, Pearce

M - Bradley, Feilhaber, Paco, Clark, Bedoya, Beasley, Donovan, Holden, Edu

F - Altidore, Dempsey, Buddle, Johnson

I would even think about only taking two keepers and also bringing Gomez. I chose Johnson for speed.

With this roster I could cut 5 strikers and not lose any sleep over it. We are in deep trouble. Who will score our goals?
My hope is that one of these strikers steps up in camp and during exhibitions to show that they belong on the team, a la 2009 Davies.

I'm not Catholic, but would gladly send prayers to a Saint that could bring us glory and respect in South Africa!!!

I don't think there are a lot of surprises. Bradley did a fine job picking a good mix of core players and those that are performing well right now. Coaches in the past would not have selected Buddle or Gomez, which is a strong decision by Bradley. I'm a little surprised he didn't add Frankie as a veteran defender for at least the 30 man roster. Now, the question is going to be, who plays there way onto the team?

He had to make a tough choice with Davies. If he is not ready, he is not ready. You have to figure that if Charlie was even close to being ready that Bradley would have choosen him. The forward options are limited and we really need his speed. Give Bradley some credit, the team did pretty well last summer.

Bornstein is still a really bad choice for a starting left back. He makes at least one mistake every game that leads to a goal.
Kljestan & Rogers Seriously?

Davies is not included because his club would not release him.

At Trix -

Isn't it because AC Milan's medical staff has given Gooch the thumbs up whereas Davies' club doctors have not cleared him medically?

If hes not taking davies who is our top striker because he's still not 100% why in the world would Gooch be included on the roster if he used the same criteria????
