BRADLEY NAMES PRELIMINARY ROSTER
RECAPS
EXTRA TIME
CHAD WINGER - Tuesday, May 11, 2010
Charlie Davies will not be heading to South Africa as his name was not on the provisional 30-man World Cup roster released by US head coach Bob Bradley.

Davies was not given medical clearance by French club Sochaux and will not be able to fulfill his near-miraculous recovery from October's car crash.

There were few other surprises on the list, with the possible exception of Real Salt Lake's Robbie Findley or Columbus Crew defender Chad Marshall.

Injured Schalke midfielder Jermaine Jones did not make the list, while long-term knee victim Oguchi Onyewu was added to the roster.

All 30 players will now report to Princeton, New Jersey for a week-long camp from May 17-23 ahead of two friendlies - against the Czech Republic on May 25th in Hartford, Connecticut and Turkey on May 29th in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Bradley will need to pare down his submission to a 23-man final roster by June 1.

You people are dreaming if you think that Charlie Davies can contribute with no match time after a horrific accident. His touch will not be there and he may not even be able to run the same. He broke his leg in 2 places. Touch is everything in Football.

I agree with with Michael Diver, CD9 prevented himself from going to SA when he broke curfew.

Just a reminder that 7 of these guys will not be going. They are attending a camp to determine who will go based on performance and team chemistry.

I will say that if Sach Kljestan gets the nod over Paco Torres, I may join the BB does not have a clue train. For now, I will give him the benefit of the doubt. It is only his preliminary roster.

I like who Bradley took. Apparently he couldn't have taken Davies had he wanted to. Our problem is primarily in defense. Why Bradley is in love with Bornstein I'll never know...anybody care to enlighten me? Each time he's on the pitch he does something absolutely stupid.

Bradley isn't doing anything other coaches don't do, I guess. Seems like they don't see what we see watching games on TV. Maybe he's really funny and he helps team morale?

The clubs do NOT control who can play for national teams. Bradley was just using that as a weak excuse re not selecting Davies. If the USA wanted to call him into camp, they are not required by FIFA to get medical clearance from his club team. In fact, clubs are obligated to release players to the national teams whether they like it or not -- including those who may still be recovering from injury. Any serious fan of the game will surely have noticed these "club vs country" controversies in the past with European and South American teams.

I am surprised and disappointed Davies did not make the roster of 30. Would have also like to have seen Adu on there, since he is among the most skilled USA players and probably has the most potential as a super-sub, late-game changer. Not thrilled with some of the comparatively mediocre MLS players who made the roster: Bornstein, Marshall, Kleijstan, Rogers, Buddle, and Findley. Does anyone other than Coach Bob really think these guys are the answer for WC 2010?

my 23:

GK: all three

D: Carlos Bocanegra, Oguchi Onyewu, Steve Cherundolo, Jonathan Spector, Jay DeMerit, Clarence Goodson, Jonathan Bornstein

M: Landon Donovan, Michael Bradley, Stuart Holden, Ricardo Clark, Maurice Edu, Benny Feilhaber, Jose Francisco Torres, Alejandro Bedoya, DaMarcus Beasley

F: Jozy Altidore, Clint Dempsey, Edson Buddle, Eddie Johnson

Tough decision on Buddle, EJ or Gomez. I ended up going with Buddle for his size. EJ had to come so we have someone with a lot of pace. So, in this scenario, I think it is Gomez who gets cut. As for defense, I would be fine with Pearce over Bornstein. To be honest, I don't think either will even play longer than 30 minutes total in the first 3 games, if that.

apparently some of you didn't read the second paragraph: "Davies was not given medical clearance by French club Sochaux" He was not cleared by Sochaux to attend the camp.

Bob Bradley did not prevent Charlie Davies from going to South Africa. Charlie Davies prevented it himself with some reckless behavior last October.

It is a shame. The team is weakened considerably by Charlie's absence. We will miss him. I hope Bradley gives a couple young guys a chance to go. Surely Eddie Johnson has proven he is not the answer. In the end, regardless of whoever else is picked at forward, it's going to be up to Altidore and Dempsey.

Love Bedoya/Buddle on there, but no Davies in favor of such poor ones as Ching, Johnson, Findley, Klejstan, Beasley? Bradley just doesn't get it, time to hire a European coach with top European experience.

Now we know Donovan or Dempsey is starting up top with Altidore, and so does England.

He was not released by his club for medical reasons. Bradley has no choice

I have no idea how they couldn't take a flyer on Davies versus EJ or Findley. Makes zero sense to me.
