GKIONIS PUSHING FOR A ST. MIRREN DEAL

EXTRA TIME
MICHAEL ADUBATO - Friday, July 16, 2010
Niko Gkionis was given the chance to show St. Mirren how good he is as the Saints defeated second division Ayr United 3-1 Wednesday night in their first friendly of the pre-season.

"The conditions were tough since it was raining very hard, but I did some good things," the New Jersey native told Yanks Abroad.

The ex-Royal Liege man was given the first half to show his stuff as head coach Danny Lennon made 11 changes after the intermission.

"I got on the ball and did well the coach told me;. He also said that I had good toughness in the tackle."

Gkionis almost put his name on the score sheet in a game that the Scottish Premier League team dominated, when Irishman David van Zanten spotted his run into the box. The American headed goalwards with power but it sailed wide of the Ayr post.

"I've been working hard in training and hopefully I cad do enough to earn a spot on the team."

The midfielder will get another chance to impress next week when the Saints take on second division Dumbarton FC on Monday evening.

A big question for U.S. fans heading into the World Cup is surely on Jozy Altidore and just what is plaguing the young striker at Sunderland.
