DUSTIN BECK - Sunday, November 28, 2010
Charles Kauzlauskas went the full distance on the backline for Helmond helping assure a win for his club on Saturday versus Fortuna Sittard.
The hosts got a much needed victory in front of the home fans as Helmond remains at fifth place in the league standings despite struggling in recent weeks.
Helmond got the scoring started in the seventh minute when Brazilian striker Bruno Andrade was fouled hard just outside the 18 yard box. The referee however chose to play advantage and waved play on. The ball came to the feet of Marc Hocher, who then chipped back over the defense to Bruno who chested it down and slid it past the keeper from ten yards out to take the early one goal lead.
That was it for the first half with Helmond missing several chances to open things up. They finally got their second goal in the 52nd minute when a shot by Hocher from 18 yards out was deflected down into the path of Belgian midfielder Robbie Haemhouts who used a touch to side step his defender and the keeper before sticking it home through the goalkeepers legs from eight yards out to double the lead. It was Haemhout's third goal of the year.
The hosts would add another goal 20 minutes later and appeared to be cruising when a corner kick resulted in a scramble in front of the goal that was poorly cleared. The ball got into the path of 21 year old Dutch centerback Gus Joppen who put his half volley in the right hand corner for his first goal of the season and to make it a three goal lead.
Things would get a little too exciting for the home fans late though. In the 80th minute Fortuna finally broke through with a wild goal from their Dutch striker Zarko Grabovac.
After a cross into the box, Grabovac attempted to bicycle his shot past the keeper, the ball deflected off the crossbar, then off the left post and back across the face of the goal where Grabovac got back on his feet and headed the ball into an open net to cut the deficit by two.
Three minutes later in the 83rd minute Fortuna would again score. A long throw into the box fell to the ground near the six yard box, where it was poked in by Belgian striker Fabio Caracciolo for his sixth goal of the year to make it a one goal game and give the visitors reason to hope.
The hope would only last a short time however as Bruno would score once again. A cross into the box was layed off to the Brazilian, who buried it in the top right corner past a helpless keeper, as Fortuna had got caught pushing forward looking for the equalizer.
Helmond added another goal in the 89th minute as Ilja van Leerdam chested down a pass from across the top of the 18 yard box turned and stuck the ball in the far left corner for his first goal of the season just before stoppage time.
Kauzlauskas played his usual steady style at right back, helping his team get their seventh win of the season and remain just three points out of third.
Helmond will host Veendam this upcoming Friday. Veendam currently sits in tenth place in the table with 17 points.
