DUSTIN BECK - Thursday, January 20, 2011
US national team defender Oguchi Onyewu made his debut for his new club FC Twente and played the full 90 minutes.

A report of injury in the back of the FC Twente defense left an opening that Onyewu was more than happy to step immediately into. Coach Michael Preud'homme who is a familiar face for Onyewu having previously coached him in Belgium at Standard Liege gave the Yank the first start of his loan in front of 23,8000 loyal home fans at De Grolsch Veste stadium on Wednesday.

Onyewu, who just recently came to Twente on loan from AC Milan, played 90 minutes in a position where US national team fans would love to see some help, left back. It would be hard to imagine Gooch being able to play that position on the international level but it was great to see him on the field again.

FC Twente rode a four goal explosion from Austrian striker Marc Janko to defeat Heracles be the final of 5-0.

Janko got the scoring started in the fourth minute after a through ball out of the midfield found the feet of Luuk de Jong, who then put a cross into the near post where Janko was waiting for the finish.

Janko returned the favor 35 minutes later when a series of possession changes in the midfield finally found Janko who played a smooth through ball to de Jong who hammered home the pass with a right footed drive from 18 yards out.

The first half scoring wasn't quite done as Janko found the net for the second time just before halftime after he poached a cheap goal at the back post after a simple lofted chip from Venezualan Roberto Rosales.

The halftime whistle did nothing to slow down the FC Twente attack as the continued in full throttle through the rest of the game where Janko picked up his second pair of goals.

The goal that marked the hat trick for the Austrian striker came in the 60th minute. With Heracles attempting to get forward, a couple of simple passes out of the back eventually found Peter Wisgerhof who made the final pass from the center circle and found Janko with tons of space behind the Heracles backline, after a nifty toe drag around the attacking goalie Janko put the ball away cleanly from 18 yards away for his third goal.

The scoring mercifully ended ten minutes later when a poorly played ball in the back was stripped by a pressing Twente side. Two passes later Luuk de Jong once again found Janko who made one soft touch to his left and then a left footed finish from fourteen yards to finally end the onslaught at 5-0.

Onyewu looked good overall especially early with fatigue probably having much to do with a litle bit of the tactical sloppiness late. Overall it was a great first game back for the towering US international in whatever position he was playing.

Twente is currently in second place in the Dutch Eredivisie standing trailing leaders PSV Einhoven by just one point.

The next seven days will be big for FC Twente as they travel to fourth place Groningen on Sunday and then return for a huge home match next Wednesday against Eindhoven.

good for gooch! face it, he was out of his depth in italy and although holland is perhaps a bit lower than he should be, its better to swim with the little fishes than to watch the big ones from the sidelines!

Jeez Onyewu at left back? Did this team not have a 15 yr old to call up from their reserve team? Gooch has NO techical skills, NO speed, NO ability to beat his man down the flank. He must been one of those left backs who just stayed back.
Cant imagine his big lumbering, slow footed azz trying to get forward! lol
