Maurice Edu and Rangers take a break from league action this weekend when they face Motherwell in the semifinal of the Scottish League Cup on Sunday at Hampden Park in Glasgow.

Edu was a second half substitute in Wednesday's Scottish Premier League victory over Hibernian but could return to the starting lineup against the Steelmen.

In the two meetings that the Light Blues have had this season with Motherwell, both matches ended with a 4-1 scoreline in favor of the Glasgow club.

Sunday will likely prove to be a tougher contest since the chances are few and far between for the non-Old Firm clubs in Scotland to claim silverware.

In hopes of adding some offensive firepower during the winter transfer window following Kenny Miller's transfer to Bursaspor, Rangers boss Walter Smith had his sights set on Kris Commons of Derby County.

Unfortunately for Smith, negotiations fell through and crosstown rivals Celtic swooped in and will bring the attacker to Parkhead.

Smith maintains that there are still options available for new signings, but should his club experience another shutout on Sunday, the unrest from the Light Blues faithful will likely grow.

Also adding to the intrigue of the current state of the Rangers roster is the immediate future of Algerian defender Madjid Bougherra. Rumors have surfaced that EPL giants Arsenal have taken an interest in the right back.

His departure would leave another gaping hole in the Rangers starting 11.

A large bulk of Motherwell's offense also exited the club during the transfer window with Nick Blackman packing his bags for Aberdeen.

The on-loan player from Blackburn netted ten times for Well in the first half of the SPL season so coach Stuart McCall will require a well-rounded effort from his offense against the Rangers defense.

Kirk Broadfoot and Andrew Little are out for Rangers while Motherwell are not reporting any major injuries.
