BRIAN SCIARETTA - Wednesday, March 16, 2011
US head coach Bob Bradley today announced the national team roster for the upcoming friendlies later this month against Argentina and Paraguay.

The US will be lead by Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan who will be playing together for the first time since the 2010 World Cup. Dempsey last played with the US team for a series of friendlies in October and Donovan was last with the team in August.

The US defense will be lead by team captain Carlos Bocanegra and right back Steve Cherundolo. Oguchi Onyewu, who recently joined FC Twente, will look to reestablish himself as a dominant force with the US team now that he is once again playing regularly at the club level. The US, however, will be without Clarence Goodson who recently broke a toe while training with his club, Brondby.

The US midfield will be boosted by Stuart Holden who is enjoying a breakout season with Bolton Wanders. Jermaine Jones, Michael Bradley, and Maurice Edu are all likely to see time in central midfield in the two games.

At forward, the US will be led by Jozy Altidore who has recently began to receive regular playing time with Bursaspor in Turkey. Joining Altidore will be New York Red Bull Juan Agudelo who notched his first USMNT goal in last November's 1-0 win over South Africa.

The most surprising callups to the team were David Yelldell who is having a strong season in Germany for Duisburg and will be looking to earn his first cap. Also joining Yelldell for his first cap will be Norwich City defender Zak Whitbread who for the better part of 18 months was sidelined with injuries before finally returning to health in late December.

In addition to Whitbread, promising young defender Timothy Chandler of German club Nurnberg has received his first call. Chandler has emerged as one of the best young players in the Bundesliga after making his senior team debut earlier this season.

The US will play Argentina on Saturday, March 26 at the Medowlands Stadium and will then take on Paraguay on Tuesday, March 29 in Nashville, Tennessee.

Have to believe that Lichaj and Guzan are not called in because they are on short-term loans which are giving them regular 1st team minutes. Their current clubs obviously like them so their best bet is to stay where they are and soak up all the playing time they can get. Taking a risk on an injury with a nats call up would so mess up what they've got going isn't worth it.

Lichaj just extended his loan with his new club, Bob is probably giving him an opportunity to stay and help them gain promotion because that would be huge. If they gained promotion, they would sign Eric and he would be a starter for them while in the Prem.

It looks like everyone on the roster is finding playing time with their clubs except two: Hahnemann, and Bradley. I find the inclusion of these two questionable. We all know why Bradley is there*, but Hahnemann? He hasn't really played in several months and doesn't have that many playing years left. With Howard included, why not give some of our younger keepers a spot on the bench?

*I'm not downing his talent, but big-Bradley has used the "not getting enough playing time with club" excuse for not calling someone more than once. I'd bet the house that little-B plays every second of both games.

@Tilly - I believe Buddle scored in his opening game.

Fair selection by Bradley, nothing against Kljestan but i think US has a good amount of midfielders that can take the spot....

I know Bocas a good player and hes playing quality minutes in France but dont you think since hes on the bad side of 30 we should start phasing him out of the picture? we have so many over options.

Ahh! Why are we still waisting time on Bornstein again? He is not even playing with he club!!! And Buddle still hasn't score for his new club yet!

Bornstein over Lichaj??? Hope that the stellar play of Chandler and then eventually Lichaj in later contests, will permanently push Bornstein off the call up list!
