BRIAN SCIARETTA - Wednesday, March 16, 2011
US head coach Bob Bradley today announced the national team roster for the upcoming friendlies later this month against Argentina and Paraguay.

The US will be lead by Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan who will be playing together for the first time since the 2010 World Cup. Dempsey last played with the US team for a series of friendlies in October and Donovan was last with the team in August.

The US defense will be lead by team captain Carlos Bocanegra and right back Steve Cherundolo. Oguchi Onyewu, who recently joined FC Twente, will look to reestablish himself as a dominant force with the US team now that he is once again playing regularly at the club level. The US, however, will be without Clarence Goodson who recently broke a toe while training with his club, Brondby.

The US midfield will be boosted by Stuart Holden who is enjoying a breakout season with Bolton Wanders. Jermaine Jones, Michael Bradley, and Maurice Edu are all likely to see time in central midfield in the two games.

At forward, the US will be led by Jozy Altidore who has recently began to receive regular playing time with Bursaspor in Turkey. Joining Altidore will be New York Red Bull Juan Agudelo who notched his first USMNT goal in last November's 1-0 win over South Africa.

The most surprising callups to the team were David Yelldell who is having a strong season in Germany for Duisburg and will be looking to earn his first cap. Also joining Yelldell for his first cap will be Norwich City defender Zak Whitbread who for the better part of 18 months was sidelined with injuries before finally returning to health in late December.

In addition to Whitbread, promising young defender Timothy Chandler of German club Nurnberg has received his first call. Chandler has emerged as one of the best young players in the Bundesliga after making his senior team debut earlier this season.

The US will play Argentina on Saturday, March 26 at the Medowlands Stadium and will then take on Paraguay on Tuesday, March 29 in Nashville, Tennessee.

Yeah, agree with LichaJ. Wonder where Spector will play? We need to find a solid left back, 10 years ago. I still like Bocanegra though.

More or less, I think the choices that were made are fantastic!!!!! I am so happy to see Chandler in the mix, he is a fantastic young talent, and Yelldell has really deserved this call up. Unfortunatelly I would have liked to see a few more faces in the mix, but I have to give Bradley credit for looking outside of his box for talent. Good choices, and I wish the new commers all the strength and luck to make a good showing.

I'm guessing now that Guzan is getting minutes with Hull, they feel it is better to let that continue and for him to firmly establish himself there instead of watching Howard play for 180 minutes. I wouldn't read anything into it.

Im excited to see Whitbread; i've heard about him, but since i've only been following international soccer, and only for a few years, i have yet to see 'em. Good luck guys!

I am very excited to finally get a chance to see Chandler play.

Nice to see here Yelldell, Whitbread, and especially Chandler. Guzan is not here because he will not play in the Gold cup because his marriage and Lichaj is not here because 2 right defenders (Cherundulo and Chandler) are enough.
I'd like to see Tores and Bunbury, maybe Bedoya and prefer to test one more time Loyd instead of Bornstein.
FEILHABER is already 26 and still did not achieve anything.

lichaj and guzan have futures with the squad, wouldnt look too far into it, maybe just deciding to remain with their current clubs and looking for permanent deals? purely speculation. Pumped to see chandler and whitbread though, very intriguing.

BBradley REALLY must have a problem with Convey not to give him a call up for a look at Left back.
I know the Nat's are heavy and full-up at midfield and thus i can see why he might not call a veteran national teamer in, due to giving favor & priority to those who most likely will be the starters over the next 4 years. Especially when they may be trying to transition into a 4-5-1....but we still HAVE NO TRUE quality LB and Convey still is young, has played there before for the nat's, and and has the engine and skill to be both an attacking and defensive asset. Bornstein?????? please......

What say you Brian ?? (Or what is the scoop as to the dislike & scandal between the two of them??)
Great website.

I am surprised Brad Guzan and Eric Lichaj didn't get called up.

Why choose Hahnemann over Guzan? Even if Hahnemann is better (which he's not) Guzan is the future. How many more years does Hahnemann have left?

And... Whitbread is trying to get back into shape and re-establish himself. Lichaj seems well positioned at Leeds.

Looking forward to seeing Chandler play at the international level. Wish Lichaj was added also.
