A wonder goal from Nikica Jelavic helped Maurice Edu and Rangers earn another big road win versus Aberdeen on Wednesday night at Pittodrie Stadium in Aberdeen.

Currently decimated by injuries, Rangers head coach Walter Smith shifted Edu into a defensive role against the Dons slotting in the US international at right back.

Edu performed well at the position making several key clearances including one off the goal line in the second half that nearly drew the hosts level.

The former Toronto FC man also picked up a yellow card in the 62nd minute for a tackle on Aberdeen's Chris Maguire who had been howling for a call the entire evening.

Rangers started off sluggish but got the strike they needed in the 22nd minute courtesy of Jelavic.

Goalkeeper Allan McGregor's long punt sailed toward the Croatian who chested it and then unleashed a bicycle kick from 18 yards out that flew past stunned Aberdeen goalkeeper Jamie Langfield and into the back of the net.

Later in the half Rangers had a claim for a penalty kick after Jelavic was brought down in the area however the referee signaled for play to continue.

The second half saw the Dons control possession and several times Edu and the Rangers back line were called on to clear danger from the area.

Edu had another clutch defensive play when fellow defender Steven Whittacker slipped allowing Macguire an open look at goal only for Edu to slide over and force a wide shot from the Aberdeen forward.

In the end, the Light Blues hung on and still stay within two points of Scottish Premier League leaders Celtic.

Next up for Edu and Rangers is a return home to Ibrox Stadium on Saturday to face St. Mirren.
