RECAP: WEEKEND MEXICAN ACTION

EXTRA TIME
EDGAR ZUNIGA - Monday, May 2, 2011
Herculez Gomez and Jose Francisco Torres lined up for Pachuca, but the rest of the Yanks in Mexico rode the pine.

Pachuca 1 - 1 Necaxa

In what was practically an insignificant match, Pachuca and Necaxa treated their most loyal fans to a dull draw, despite the early expulsion of Necaxa defender Luis Francisco Garcia.

Garcia did not wait for the end of the game to pack his bags, earning a yellow in the 5th minute and another in the 8th to earn the red.

As expected, both Herculez Gomez and Jose Francisco Torres got the start for Pachuca, but neither one figured in their team's lone goal, which was scored by Yulian Anchico in the 15th minute.

Anchico was at the receiving end of a pass from Franco Arizala and beat Necaxa 'keeper Oscar "Conejo" Perez with a right-footed shot in the area.

However, Pachuca was unable to capitalize on the man-advantage and add to their lead. Whatever momentum they had mustered slowly eroded as time wore on. Eventually, Necaxa was able to control the flow of play and capitalized in the 62nd minute on a run by Ismael Iņiguez, who eluded Pachuca 'keeper Rodolfo Cota and calmly pushed the ball into the net.

Then, Pachuca defender Paul Nicolas Aguilar earned consecutive yellows in a two-minute span, getting sent off in the 67th minute, evening things up on the field.

Necaxa applied some pressure but lack of cohesiveness in the attacking third foiled anything worthwhile.

The result left both teams at the bottom of their respective groups.

Notes

Gustavo Ruelas did not get any playing time for Santos Laguna as they beat Estudiantes Tecos 3-1. E-Tecos members Daniel Antunez and Sammy Ochoa stayed on the bench, as well.

Jaguares crushed Queretaro 4-1 to end their season on a high note. However, neither Francisco Lopez (Jaguares) or Isaac Acuņa (Queretaro) got to play.

Once again, Jonathan Bornstein watched from the bench, as Tigres UANL smashed Atlas 3-0.

There was an Edgar on the field for Puebla but it was not Edgar Castillo, who sat out his team's 2-0 loss to Morelia.

A big question for U.S. fans heading into the World Cup is surely on Jozy Altidore and just what is plaguing the young striker at Sunderland.
