BRIAN SCIARETTA - Monday, May 23, 2011
US national team head coach Bob Bradley today announced his 23 man roster that will play in this summer's Gold Cup.

With a spot in the 2013 Confederations Cup on the line, Bradley named the strongest roster available to him.

The US backline will be lead by captain Carlos Bocanegra and Steve Cherundolo who were stalwarts at the 2010 World Cup where the Americans advanced to the final 16. Clarence Goodson was on the World Cup team but did not see any action in South Africa. His exceptional play this season at Brondby however will see him most likely play a larger role.

In the midfield, Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan will once again lead the team as they have for the past five years. They will be joined by regulars in Michael Bradley, Maurice Edu, and Benny Feilhaber.

The biggest addition this cycle is Jermaine Jones who switched his national affiliation from Germany to the US in 2009 but missed out on the World Cup with a lengthy leg injury. His presence should boost the US in the central midfield.

The biggest surprise of the tournament is the addition of Freddy Adu who has seen a return to form the past season when he joined Rzespor of the Turkish second division.

Bolton Wanders' midfielder Stuart Holden will miss the tournament with a knee injury and his absence is the most significant for the US team.

At forward, Juan Agudelo and Chris Wondolowski will look to provide a boost at a position the US team has struggled since 2009 when Charlie Davies suffered serious injuries in a car crash.

The most notable absence on the team is Nurnberg right back Timothy Chandler who declined to join the team because he was tired after his first professional season and Nurnberg's preseason begins on June 26.

Other notable absences are Stabaek's Mikkel Diskerud, Pachuca's Herc Gomez and Jose Torres, Orebro's Alejandro Bedoya, Ingolstadt's Edson Buddle, and Sporting Kansas City's Teal Bunbury.

Mexico are currently the defending champions of the Gold Cup after winning the tournament in 2009. That tournament however was mostly played with second team players as a Confederations Cup spot was not on the line.

The last time a birth in the Confederations Cup was on the line at the Gold Cup was in 2007 when the US won the tournament following a thrilling 2-1 win over Mexico in the final at Chicago's Soldier Field.

The US will host Spain on June 4 in Foxboro to prepare for the Gold Cup.

Guys, I'm almost positive Davies is hurt, and Chandler is recovering for injuries, or something like that.

Bornstein choice REALLY has me at a loss for words. Bradley, terrible choice. And where's Bedoya? where's Gomez? Where's BUNBURY!? I can understand Wondo, he's in form BUT, Bunbury and Agudelo should get some sort of experience together if they are the future no? Since Altidore hasn't proved his worth AT ALL! Shame on me for getting his jersey

1. Iím very disappointing with Chandler decision. It seems to me that his switch to Germany team is inevitable.
2. Where is Whitbread?
3. Iím glad that Freddy got a chance, but Iíd like to see more guys who are eligible to represent country in the Olympics: Bunbury, Diskerud, someone else.
4. Bornstein? :(
5. Will we have a chance to see Edu-Jones pared? MB probably better than both of them, but let us compare. At least for Guadalupe game :)

What about Michael Parkhurst? He's a great player and deserves to be on this team.

Some disturbing choices- I'm at a loss for words.
Kljestan and Adu over Bedoya or Torres?
Bornstein over anybody?

How many of these 23 have been doing a lot of sitting lately?!?

I'm trying to imagine a starting XI without some kind of disgrace, and nothing's coming to me. I fully expect some bullshit like M.Bradley starting and Edu sitting.

Fire this over-thinking coach.
His renewal is breaking my heart.

My two club players from the New York Redbulls are on the roster, Ream and Agudelo. I recently told Tim Ream during an autograph session at Redbull Arena, FOR CLUB AND COUNTRY.

Why is Bornstein still on the damn roster? When will Bradley say enough is enough? If this kid Chandler leaves for Germany, than we can all say that it was Bradley's fault.

Where is Charlie Davies?

I hope this isn't a case of Chandler keeping his options open with a future switch in mind. Needing a rest is not something you hear from senior squad players very often.

Bornstein? Really??

I think Bradley may be hoping that Bornstein knows the other big fish in the sea.

I have historically felt Bob has done a good job, but this selection is questionable at best. Unless Howard is on point, Spain will shred this team. It's also a total slap in the face Davies who has three times the goals of Agudelo, three times the experience, and is known to partner well with Altidore. Adu and Rogers, have no business being anywhere near the team. M. Bradley hasn't started a competitive game in 6 months, in spite of being healthy. Spector hasn't played as a defender since the last world cup, and has been significantly better as a midfielder. J. Jones has yet to turn in a good outing for the national team and was hardly impressive in a terrible Blackburn side. Bornstein..... if he's going to throw away roster spot how about giving me a shot coach?

I've lost a lot of respect for Bob. If we fail to win the Gold cup and hence qualify for the Confed Cup 2013 with this "full-strength side", it's time to move on to a more experienced manager.
