DAVID SMITH - Saturday, June 25, 2011
The quarterfinal matchups for the Norwegian Cup have been set, pitting Josh Gatt, Sean Cunningham and their Molde teammates against 11-time winners Fredrikstad FK in a mid-August showdown.
Molde rode a late charge in their fourth-round game against Hønefoss to fly into the quarterfinals, bagging a trio of goals within the last 20 minutes to overcome an early score by their opponents.
Their quest to add a third Norwegian Cup title to their trophy cabinet now takes them to the southeast corner of the country, where they will take on the the team with the all-time second most trips to the winner's podium.
One of Norway's most storied decorated of the last century, The Aristocrats have had a topsy-turvy last few years, winning the cup in 2006 and finishing runners-up in the Tippeligaen in 2008, only to suffer relegation one year later.
In their first season back in the top flight they have struggled somewhat in league play, hovering close to the bottom three, but will still be no pushovers in their home stadium for Ole Gunnar Solskjær's team.
Molde last lifted the cup in 2005, although they missed out by the narrowest of margins two years ago, losing a close penalty shootout in the final to Aalesund.
The teams have met once so far in league play this season, with Molde having come out holding a 2-1 edge at the final whistle.
The game is set to be played on the afternoon of Sunday, August 14 in Fredrikstad Stadion.
