RICH FIDLER - Tuesday, September 13, 2011
Charles Kazlauskas scored his first goal of the season in Monday evenings victory for Helmond Sport while Jozy Altidore played 45 minutes in AZ's destruction of Vitesse on Saturday.

AZ Alkmaar 4-0 Vitesse

Despite concerns about his fitness following a week away with the US National Team head coach Gertjan Verbeek put the American striker in the starting eleven for their victory on Saturday afternoon.

In the 22nd minute Swedish international Pontus Wernbloom directed Rasmus Elm's corner kick past visiting goalkeeper Piet Velthuizen with authority to give the home team a 1-0 lead.

Just five minutes later it was the Swede's head that did the damage again, this time getting on the end of a free-kick from Johann Berg Gudmundsson to double their lead.

Roy Beerens got behind the visitors defense just seven minutes from the half-time whistle and easily deposited the ball in the back of the net after beating a shell-shocked Velthuizen.

The first half would end with a fourth goal for the home team when Elm was fouled in the area by Frank van der Struijk and took the subsequent penalty, slotting the ball in to the bottom right corner with authority.

Altidore came off at half-time for former Venlo striker Ruud Boymans as neither team was able to find a goal in the second half. The visitors did have Bonno Wilfried sent off in the 70th minute after a second yellow card.

Alkmaar will face Malmo FF in the Europa League on Thursday before rejoining league play on the road Sunday against RKC Waalwijk.

Helmond Sport 3-1 FC Zwolle

Helmond Sport easily dispatched of a tough visitors on Monday evening after playing nearly 80 minutes with one more player on the field.

The visitors found themselves playing down a player just 11 minutes in to the game when Rochdi Achenteh was shown two quick yellow cards. The midfielder was originally booked for slamming the ball down in disgust and then chest bumped official Rutger Bekebrede which immediately brought out the second yellow and his dismissal.

Kazlauskas would put the home team just three minutes later to start the rout when he raced on to Gilian Justiana's long ball in to the penalty area. The Wisconsin native barely beat goalkeeper Diederik Boer to the ball and clipped it over him in to the empty net.

Striker Erik Quekel doubled the lead in the 28th minute as he redirected Daniel Guijo Velasco's free-kick in to the penalty area past a rather stunned Zwolle defense.

Just three minute in to the second half Kazlauskas would pick up his second yellow card of the season with a clumsy tackle.

Mustafa Saymak pulled one goal back for the visitors in the 86th minute when his blast from just outside the penalty area caught goalkeeper Björn Sengier flat-footed and nestled in at the near post.

Kelvin Bossman, who entered in the 85th minute, put the game out of reach in stoppage time when Quekel found the substitute racing in to the area and he placed a shot just under the 'keeper who was charging out of his area.

Helmond will turn around and head on the road to Mitsubishi Forklift Stadium to face Almere City on Friday evening.
